A resume gets 7 seconds

Make it simple

Consider your reader

Be clear, focused and concise

Make it easy to read and beautiful

Formatting is KING

Eliminate useless information

State your focus and substantiate it

THE SINGLE GOAL:

To get it in the “yes” pileSlide3

2 audiences for your resume:

Automated reader (HRIS)

Recognizes keywords - so you should have keywords that match the ones they would use to search for a candidate in the position you want

Human reader

Be nice to the human! We love simple, beautiful documents that make sense.Slide4

3 Keys:

1. Focus

Look up professional associations to research your field. Align your skills and career instincts to the field.

2. Format

Make it easy to read and you have made it easy for them to like you. Less work for them = you’re in.

3. First Words

The most expensive real estate on your resume is the headline, and the first words of any line.Slide5

Key #1: Focus

Be bold - tell the reader what you want . . . Or you will lose the interest of your reader

Generally describe your focus so the reader can interpret where your skills fit in their organization

Resist the temptation to pinpoint the exact job because you need to cast a net wide enough to trigger interest

Communicate the skills you bring to the job/field by DESCRIBING and SUBSTANTIATINGSlide6

How to Build Focus:

A

BOLD

headline naming the general job title(s) you are aiming for

Sentence #1 – A broad statement giving an overview of your experience

Sentence #2 – Your particular expertise, what makes you really good at what you do

Sentence #3 – A style statement showing the reader about you and how you get the job doneSlide7

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCESlide13

Key #2: Format

Keep it simple and clear with easy words

Shorten, condense and simplify

Resumes are not for reading, they are for glancing

Use a sans serif font (I like Calibri 11) so the eye can bounce around the page. One font only except for your name. Use one that accentuates and stylizes the letters based on what you like

Use white space and bullet points to relax the eye

Eliminate clutter, useless information, TMISlide14

Key #3: First Words

Location, location, location

HEADLINE is the most expensive real estate

Lead-ins to any sentence

Action verbs describing your job activities and accomplishments

Describe experience in accomplishment statements versus responsibilities by quantifying as much as you can (saved 3 steps, added 20 new clients, generated $40K in revenue, etc.)Slide15

Take these keys seriously!

They are the keys to getting your resume noticed, set aside, and use to

ZERO IN ON YOU AS A POSSIBLE CANDIDATE.Slide16

Build the resume body

Job title first, name of company, dates IN BOLD

Show how you got the job and give a brief overview of your main responsibilities

Use bullet points to describe accomplishmentsSlide17
