Doctrine 33

The Holy Trinity 34

Trouble with Explanation Divine cannot suffer Crucified Man could not be the Messiah Only criminals suffer execution Criminals rejected by God Divine cannot change Malachi 3:6 “For I the Lord, do not change”) Pagans did not believe divine being could take on human flesh 35

Diversity Early Christians knew worshiping Jesus Christ as God’s willRomans knew early Christians worshiped Jesus Christ as God Heresy (separate or go off on one’s own) : Some fractions spoke only of Jesus’ humanity; while others spoke of Jesus’ Divinity 36 Even as early as St Paul, there was need to address orthodoxy (correct belief)

Diversity in Theology 37 Process to develop answers included three thoughts: Heresy- versus -Orthodoxy The thought: True belief is the middle ground between the two extremes (only divine versus only human) Christology (belief in Christ) informs understanding of salvation (Soteriology)

Orthodoxy or true belief 38 Understanding Orthodoxy, throughout the history of the church is built on the belief of the previous generations. The tracking of belief back to Jesus Christ is vital to support a “true belief”. The term apostolic succession based upon the assumption that generations of teachers are faithfully transmitting what they were taught and safeguarding the Churches doctrine. Not only apostolic succession but also “ sensus fidelium ”- that the tradition of the Church is guided by God.

Heresy or wavering from the truth 39 On the other had we have Innovations or new ideas was not as accepted (as they cannot be traced or are not supported in scripture)- thus the idea of heresy.

Christologies EbonitesEmphasized the humanity of Christ Denying his divinity Jesus was a prophet Inspired by the Holy SpiritJust a manReject the worship of Christ Gnostics Emphasized the divinity of Christ Divine Spirit separate from the evil demi-god of the Old Testament Resurrection was a vision (true non-human form) 40

Adoptionism 41 God is one because Jesus is not God Jesus not Divine Filled with the Holy Spirit after baptism and during his ministry A man able to be perfectly obedient to God; therefore God adopted Jesus as his Son Not the giver of the Holy Spirit but the receiver Holy Spirit left Jesus when he called out to God on the cross Resurrection nothing more than a metaphor for eternal life.

Modalism 42 God is one because Jesus is the Father During his ministry Jesus was disguised as human but not really (wearing a mask) God changed “hats” to be God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Jesus was not human as he was the Father The Father and the Son are not only one but the same.

The Problem 43 Modalism- Removed the human nature from Christ and thereby leaving humanity with no representative, and no real connection to the Divine. Too much unity and not enough distinction between Father and Son. Adoptionists – Removed the divine nature from Christ and thereby leaving God with no representative, and no real connection to the human. To much distinction and not enough unity between the Father and the Son.

The True Belief 44 The Church found truth in the middle ground Christ is the one in the middle between the two false christs . Jesus Christ both Human and Divine Mainstream Church Against Adoptionism Mere human the savior Scripture showed a unique relationship of Jesus with God

The True Belief 45 Against Modalism How could one not Human give his life as a representative of humanity Why did he eat Does this mean God the Father died on the cross?

The True Belief 46 Correct belief be came the middle of the two extremes. The Church emphasized Christ’s full divinity (Colossians 2:9) The Church emphasized while the Son is divine, he is not the Father (Jesus prayed to the Father) Jesus Christ is both fully human and fully divine-a perfect balance of the fullness of both. In addition the Father and Son (later including the Holy Spirit, are one but not the same; distinct, but not separate.

The True Belief 47 In addition the Father and Son (later including the Holy Spirit), are one but not the same; distinct, but not separate.

The True Belief 48 Further definition is that we can not differentiate between the Father and Son by saying was one is creator and one is redeemer, as they are both Creator (John 1:3)and they are both savior. (Exodus 15, Isaiah 63:16)

The True Belief 49 Attempts to placing different job descriptions violate the principle of inseparable operation. The persons of the Trinity are so unified that anything said about one person of the Trinity can be said about the other two, as well.

Tertullian 50 Trinity -third century a theologian named Tertullian defined terminology for the Trinity Latin Trinitas (Trinity) Latin personae (persons) Latin substantia (substance) explain oneness not tangible think of essence. The essence of the Trinity is divinity itself, and that essence (or substance) is one divinity shared by all three person of the Trinity. Three distinct persons sharing one substance- divinity.

Tertullian 51 Divine- what does this imply: Omnipresent- everywhere at all times Omnipotent- all powerful Omni benevolent- always good As Catholics, we believe in one God, because there is only one divinity, even though it is shared by the three persons of the Trinity.

Novatian 52 Third Century Roman priest wrote a treatise on the Trinity indicating to understand the Trinity required an understanding of christology. Novatian wrote of Christ emptying himself to become human. Emptying himself of divine power, the divine attributes we spoke of earlier (omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience). Not an emptying of divinity but of the power of divinity. Think of the miracles, not by his own power but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Novatian 53 Not an emptying of divinity but of the power of divinity. Think of the miracles, not by his own power but by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 12:28) Jesus told his disciples they could do the same works he did and even greater works, because they would have the same access to the Holy Spirit (John 14:12)

Novatian 54 Emptying (kenosis) The christology of descent. Jesus started out divine and descended to become human (Philippians 2:6-8, John 1:14)

The True Belief 55 The conclusion of the orthodox theologians The Trinity is to be understood in terms of a balance of unity and distinction The unity is found in a single divine substance The singular power and activity is inseparable Equal eternity of the three persons

Affirmation to our beliefs and to address the heresy We have The Nicene Creed 56

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty (omnipotent) The Nicene Creed Including the divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit God the Father of the old and the new testament are one and the same 57

Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible The Nicene Creed Creator of and Provider for all of creations (CCC238-239) The first person of the Trinity is the ultimate Source and origin of all, even the Son and the Spirit (CCC245) 58

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God The Nicene Creed Only Begotten Son of God meaning he is the Son of God’s own nature (unique among humanity) God- the one God Son the one Lord (1 Corinthians 8:6) Divine, natural child of God and heir 59

Born of the Father before all ages The Nicene Creed Athanasius: “Always a Father, always a Son” No time lapse between God and the begotten Son The Son is not created nor is there a beginning to his existence. Novatian: The Son is not an event, the Son is an eternal state. 60

God from God, Light From Light, true God from true God The Nicene Creed The son is no less divine than the Father Father and the Son as co-eternality emphasizes Christ full and equal divinity Distinction of the Father and the Son as one, but not one and the same. Unbegotten one (First Cause) and Begotten one. 61

Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father The Nicene Creed Remember Tertullian and he spoke of the same essence or a Greek word homoousios meaning share the same substance or essence Same divinity, same eternity 62

Through him all things were made The Nicene Creed Christ as an agent of creation (John 1:3) (CCC65) “ Christ the Son of God made man, if the Father’s one perfect, and unsurpassable Word.” and “In giving us his Son, his only Word, he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word-and he has no more to say. Therefore a paraphrase from In the beginning was the Son, and the Son was with the Father, and the Son was divine. 63

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven The Nicene Creed We talked about the christology of decent Christ is the eternal Word of God who became flesh (John 1:14) Heir and Son of the Father who temporarily set aside (chose not to use) his divine powers (Philippians 2:6-11) 64

And by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man The Nicene Creed The same Holy Spirit who anointed and inspired the prophets was the agent of the Incarnation (Matthew 1:18, 20; Luke 1:35) 65

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. The Nicene Creed His death was for our sake because it has significance for our salvation Representative of humanity (Hebrews 10-1-18) Affirmation of his true humanity (by death) 66

And rose again on the third day in accordance wit the Scriptures The Nicene Creed Corinthians 15:3-4) 67

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father The Nicene Creed Ascended from his state of humility and reclaimed the divine glory that was originally his from before time (John 17:5, Philippians 2:9-11) Ascension is a restoration to the prior status of the Son Right hand (image of the shared divine essence and unity of divine power between the Father and the Son 68

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead The Nicene Creed Jesus will return (Matthew 24:23-27) He will preside over judgment of humanity as the agent of the Father’s judgment, the Son will continue his mission exercising the Father’s will with the Father’s authority 69

And his kingdom will have no end The Nicene Creed 2 Samuel, Chapter 7 Promise of eternal Kingdom 70

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life The Nicene Creed Council of Constantinople in 381 affirms the divinity of the Holy Spirit Father, Son and Holy spirit rightly are called Lord (CCC 202) Holy spirit involved in the creation of the universe (Genesis 1:2) 71

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son The Nicene Creed Just as the Son is begotten or generated from the Father the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son to the Church (John 15:26, 16:13-15) and to humanity 72

Who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified The Nicene Creed Worship the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit Divine essence shared by the three persons of the Trinity-worshiping the Holy Spirit is worshiping God. 73

Who has spoke through the prophets The Nicene Creed Spirit of the Father and of Christ (Romans 8:9, Peter 1:11) same which inspired the Old Testament prophets & John the Baptist God is one and Christ’s action and statements in his earthy ministry is consistent wit God’s overall plan , inspired by the same Holy Spirit 74

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church The Nicene Creed Jesus instituted the Church as a continuation of his own ministry (Matthew 16:18) The Church is one (unified in teaching and sacraments) It is holy (created by Christ, continued by apostles to express God’s presence in the world) It is Catholic –universal Apostolic- founded by apostles and continuous with them 75

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins The Nicene Creed Sacrament of baptism common to almost all Christian denominations Sacrament of initiation-unify the body of Christ Receiving God’s grace (love, mercy, forgiveness) Baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-20) 76

And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. The Nicene Creed Hope of the Church Physical death is not the end of life for those who follow Christ in life will follow him in resurrection Affirm our faith 77

GOD The Nicene Creed we affirm our beliefs: God has always been a Trinity Full humanity and full divinity of Jesus Christ, the second person of the trinity. Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14) Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit share the same divine essence as God the Father When one worships the Son of God or the Holy Spirit of God –we are worshiping God 78
