Why do we conduct WSC events? How do we use the data? How do we share the data?

How do we conduct Waste Stream Characterizations?

How To: Waste Stream Characterization Steps to conducting a waste stream study Step 1: Set up tarp, bins, scale and trash grabbers Step 2: Teach participants the basics and encourage questions! Step 3: Start grabbing bags of the waste and dump them out Step 4: Begin sorting the waste into the various bins: aluminum, paper, hazardous, etc Step 5: When bins have filled, weigh them and record the data Step 6: Compile data and clean up

Why do we conduct the Waste Stream Characterization? Part 1 Expand audience You’d be amazed how many want to either participate or learn once they see you out there digging through the trash! Part 2 Start the conversation A WSC is the ultimate conversation starter when it comes to waste. People will be curious and want to know more -- especially your Tribal Council Part 3 Focus outreach efforts By starting the conversation with PPN Citizens, Leadership, staff and more the data will help inform us of ways to conduct future outreach (ie: the Styrofoam situation of 2017)

Data: How we utilize it

How do we use the WSC data? Compiling A Living Spreadsheet Since we first started doing WSCs, we compile all the data into the same spreadsheet each year. This allows us to compare & contrast, follow trends and more. Graphing Making it moving Utilizing graphs helps make your data interesting, digestible and more impactful. Graphs also help people who learn more visually than others. Sharing Building capacity A team can only move as fast as its leadership. Making your data understandable will help get everyone educated and involved.

a How do we share the WSC data? Raw Data For some people, raw numbers tell the story. We provide Council the raw data, along with the previous years’ data to allow them to compare and contrast, then digest the data Visuals Keep it simple! For others, a simple pie chart can visually tell the story -- especially when you can compare that chart to the years before

Impact and Community Outreach How did that turn out for ya? max growth
