Egyptian Numerals

The system of ancient Egyptian numerals was used in Ancient Egypt in around 3000 BC

It was a system of numeration based on the scale of ten, written in hieroglyphs

To write a number, Egyptians wrote their symbols in order from largest to smallest, either in one long line or grouped together

They worked with one place at a time, and would use more than one of a symbol to indicate when the value in a place was more than oneSlide3

Numbers in this system are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabetSlide6

Roman numeric system

Roman numerals are based on seven symbols

Numbers are formed by combining symbols and adding the values

I placed before V or X indicates one less

X placed before L or C indicates 10 less

C placed before D or M indicates a hundred lessBecause each number has a fixed value rather than representing multiples of ten, hundred and so on, according to a position, there is no need for for place keeping zeros.SymbolIVXLCDMValue1510501005001000Slide7
