The Metric System: Just Do ItSlide2

“At this time, only three countries—Burma, Liberia, and the US—have not adopted the International System of Units (SI, or metric system) as their official system of weights and measures.”

That means that the rest of the world is operating under the same system…makes things easier, don’t you think?

Also, Burma’s Deputy Minister for Commerce says that as a country they are taking steps to adopt the metric system. So, that leaves just two of us. Do we really want to be in the same boat as Liberia when it comes to decision making abilities?(“Countries that have not adopted the Metric System”)

Who uses the metric system?Slide3

Converting measurements right now requires either the most amazing of memories or an app on your phoneThe metric system merely involves moving the decimal point to the left or right (or dropping and adding zeroes, however you want to look at it)

Also, you don’t have to know different units of conversion based on liquid amount, mass, distance, etc.

The metric system uses several different units (grams, meters, or liters. Imagine if you didn’t have to convert between ounces, cups, and quarts just to make that cake you want to bake. Or, for that matter, completely forget about that tablespoon, teaspoon business and just use one unit for all your cooking and baking needs.

WHY SHOULD WE USE IT?

Converting is easierSlide4

Imagine if you didn’t have to learn an entirely new system of measurements just to be able to pass Chemistry class…I think you would vote yes!

Learning two systems of measurement is confusing for children and unnecessary for adults.

It is the language of science and medicineI know parents would feel better giving their children Tylenol at night if

they

didn’t have to convert to mL and cross

their

fingers that it has come out correctly. This would also decrease the amount of human error present in the effort to make conversions

It’s less confusing! Slide5

“Congress, recognizing the necessity of the United States’ conformance with international standards for trade, included new encouragement for U.S. industrial metrication in the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988. This legislation amended the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 and designates the metric system as the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce.”

Even if you can rent the car, you have to convert every time you want to go a certain distance and do conversions to know what speed you are traveling at

Good luck renting a car in the

We would look less foolish to the rest of the worldLess clutter in your kitchen when you get rid of that measuring cup and set of tablespoons

Fewer measurements to learn

Better understanding when taking an Intro to Chemistry classThe metric system was created with the idea in mind that it be easy to use, why make it harder??
