Metric Units and Conversions

A.S. 1.1.1 – 1.2.3Slide2

Is the US a metric country? Should it be?

Turn and talk with your table group

:

Where do we use metrics (outside of a science class) in the US?

What are some benefits to keeping the status quo in terms of our country’s usage of imperial units and metric units?

What would be some benefits to going fully metric?Slide3

d’unités

Units are standardized in order to reduce confusion when scientists are communicating data using these units.

Units (symbols) AND prefixes for the units are standardized

Supplementary Unit

: a unit that is not metric (SI), but is used regularly in physics:

Radian

: the angle subtended by an arc of a circle having the same length as the radius

Used as an alternative to the degree measurement for

angles

Celsius

: A common laboratory temperature measurement, but not actually an SI unit (at least, not a fundamental one).Slide4

Fundamental Units

Those quantities that are so basic that all other quantities need to be expressed in terms of them.Slide5

Other Definitions of Fundamental Units

HW: In your textbook,

Read pages 2-4 to get the rest of the definitions for the other 6 fundamental units

and

the explanation for when to use capital letters and why.Slide8

Derived Units

Derived Units:

those units that are formed through the combination of two or more fundamental units.

Examples:

m·s

(the more proper way to write m/s)

kg·m

assignments:

“Intro to

”—practice assignment to introduce you to the program. Not required, not scored, but highly recommended if you did not use

WebAssign

in your science class last year.  1—Metrics and Measurements. WILL be graded for correctness. Not necessary to show work, but if you are having trouble, it is highly, highly recommended.—Due Friday, 9/13, 8 AMReminder: Quiz on Friday!
