Teacher Copy – with AnswersWho is the letter from? How is the letter-writer able to fool everyone at Groosham Grange? Is the letter-writer a student or staff member? Why doesn’t David like Vincent? Is the lack of trust related to the letter in the prologue? Is David just jealous of Vincent? Where did the crow come from & why does it need resuscitation? (it was shot by the gun that began the Obstacle Course)Chapter 1 is set outside

Groosham Grange at the school sports day. Everyone is taking part in the Sporting events. The new character is Vincent King. Jill and David have both accepted the fact that they are witches. They like Groosham Grange and aren’t trying to escape. Mr.

Kilgraw

(vampire); Mr. Creer

(ghost); Mr. Fitch & Mr. Teagle

(the heads – who have 2 heads but only one neck & body); other teachers are a werewolf, witch and a 3000 year old woman.

Vincent – characteristics:

Tall, blond, handsome; arrived 3 months earlier, learned magic very quickly, might catch David in points to win the Unholy Grail; David doesn’t like or trust himOvertook David at end of Obstacle Race, but David won because he tripped Vincent up with part of a spider’s web

Sneaking around East Tower, which is too dangerous to be in

Pleased David lost points in French for being late; volunteered to ride Mrs.

Windergast’s broom & crashed; got into fight with David when he almost revealed David had cheated in the Obstacle Race

Teachers have shown special interest in David: he’s stronger, held out longest, has more powerful spells. Mr.

Teagle

seems to expect more from David.

Obstacles are: a net, a shallow pit filled with hot coals, a dimensional warp that takes them to Jupiter, a giant spider’s web, 6 electrified hurdles, a bottomless pit.

David throws spider web at Vincent, who stumbles.

David is on a rocky ledge with cliffs behind him and the sea in front of him. Jill meets him.

Jill and David talk about Vincent, why David doesn’t like him, and about David cheating in the race.

David sees Vincent. The East Tower is always closed up because it is dangerous. Vincent looks like he doesn’t want others to know he was there.

Gregor seemed to have been waiting for David; it’s strange that Gregor mentioned the Unholy Grail.David cheats to win the Obstacle Race; he works extra hard in French in case he is called on (since he’s just lost 3 points for being late); David is very upset when he realises how many points he’s lost in French/for fighting. Vincent King is ‘too perfect’, good at everything; He was sneaking around the East Tower, even though tower was out of bounds; Gregor seems to be helping Vincent; David’s ‘sixth sense’ tells him something is wrong & it’s connected to the Unholy Grail & seems to be connected to Vincent.David cheats to win the Obstacle Race & prevent Vincent from winning; he’s annoyed when Jill talks to Vincent, he asks Jill if she likes and/or fancies Vincent; he almost casts a spell on Vincent to make him fall off the broom and look bad; he teases Vincent about his flying after class.

David is late for French and loses 3 points. They all have Mrs.

Windergast’s

class next and she is teaching them about brooms and flying. Vincent flies on Mrs.

Windergast’s

broom, but then crashes. After class, Vincent teases David about losing points in French. David responds by pointing out that Vincent’s flying was bad. They argue, and David tells Vincent he should get used to being second, like in the Obstacle Race. Vincent starts to tell everyone that David cheated in the race, so David attacks him and they fight.

A new teacher, Mr. Helliwell, catches them. Everyone else leaves, and David admits that he started the fight. Mr.

Heliwell

takes 9 points from David.

Mrs.

Windergast

disintegrates Linda for answering 2 questions & showing off.

The other students are afraid; they keep staring at Linda’s ashes when Mrs.

Windergast

asks for a volunteer to fly her broom.

David seems to be jealous of Vincent. He doesn’t want Jill to like him (he’s annoyed when she talks to him), he was willing to cheat to prevent Vincent from winning the Obstacle Race.

David attacks Vincent to prevent Vincent from telling everyone that David cheated in the Obstacle Race.

Will either Mr. Helliwell or Vincent use David’s parents against him when they visit? Where did the paper come from – has someone been in David’s room to get it (Mr. Helliwell?)?

Who is the face David sees? Why are his parents changing into something horrible? Why is David in pain? Is something bad going to happen to Groosham Grange? Where is Vincent? Is he contacting someone outside of Groosham Grange? Is he going back to the East Tower? What is he doing? What are the pictures warning David about? Who have they seen passing by? How do the pictures know David may get into trouble? Who opened the safe? Why do they want to set David up?

The Heads have arguments with each other at night. There are a lot of very odd things on the table, but David doesn’t understand why a laptop is there. The head’s seem more upset that David was caught cheating than that he was actually cheating. Don’t write on the ‘thin side’ of the paper (the edge); Don’t curse the person who set the exam; you are disqualified if you curse people around you accidentally during the exam; the exam questions are funny – mentioning things that children/other people often find irritating – being kissed by a relative, getting book tokens, people talking in the cinema, etc.

Facts about Mr. Helliwell:

Huge, round shoulders, bald head

New teacher, teaches arts & crafts and voodoo

From Haiti, people there very frightened of him

Catches David and Vincent fighting, finds letter from David’s parentsDavid thinks Mr. Helliwell doesn’t like him

Mr. Helliwell is the teacher who got the Heads out of bed when they caught David in their office

Mr. Helliwell catches David looking at the Unholy Grail before the Advanced Cursing exam; Mr. Helliwell tells David he thinks he didn’t try to steal the exam & suggests Vincent tried to steal it

Mr. Helliwell takes all of the exam papersMr. Helliwell agrees to the tie-breaker being in London

They are trying to warn him that someone is setting him up.

David is caught with the exam papers, even though he hasn’t opened the safe, so it looks like he was cheating. He is caught by the Heads & Mr. Helliwell. David knows it won’t work to defend himself, so he only makes a half-hearted attempt, which is quickly shot down by the Heads. David realises he has been set up and is angry at himself because he’s been beaten by the person setting him up.

The exam takes place in the underground cavern; they go through the mirror to get there.

Mr Helliwell is at the Unholy Grail as well; He tells David he doesn’t think David tried to cheat and that David can come to him if he needs help.

Either Mr. Helliwell really does want to help David, or Mr. Helliwell wants to keep track of what David does.

Jill doesn’t want David to assume he’ll win; if he assumes that, he might not work as hard.

Vincent:

New to the school

David doesn’t trust him; has a ‘sixth sense’ that he’s bad

Was sneaking around the East TowerIs too perfect/too good at everythingWants to win the Unholy Grail – possibly hid one of David’s answers so David lost points on the Advanced Cursing examMr. Helliwell saw someone blond in the office when the safe was opened

Mr. Helliwell:

New to school

Doesn’t like David

Calls the Heads to the office to catch David

Is there when David is looking at the Unholy Grail

Puts blame on Vincent regarding the safe; wants David to come to him with problems

Takes exams papers – so he could have ‘lost’ one of them

The GG teachers meet to decide what to do about the Unholy Grail tie. Mr.

Kilgraw

suggests a trial in London and the other teachers agree. 2 days later, David and Vincent are in the caverns in boxes and are sent to London, where they need to find a statuette of Miss Pedicure in the British museum. They have 5 hours to complete the task.

David spends 3.5 hours looking all over the museum with no luck. He almost runs into guards and Vincent. He finally realises he needs to go to the Egyptian section, thanks to clues from what the teachers had said.

It is a test of stealth, because they have to make sure they are not caught. It is a test of cunning because they need to use what they already know from the teachers to figure out where to look.

Mr.

Kilgraw

said they are to find a needle in a haystack, some needles are larger than others, and that fact might give them a clue about where to look.

Miss Pedicure said that the statuette was taken from her mummy.

David should look in the Egyptian section. Mr.

Kilgraw’s

clue was about Egyptian obelisks (Cleopatra’s needle, which is very tall) and Miss Pedicure was talking about her Egyptian mummification.

Think back to the beginning of your story – why do you think Vincent wants to win the Unholy Grail so badly? What connection should David had made when he first felt the gust of cold air? What are the 2 clues that should have warned David that someone was attacking him with black magic?Name 4 of the wax works who attacked David. What happened after David was knocked out by the Duchess of York?

Why does David go to the East Tower? Describe what David finds in the East Tower and what he thinks it all means. How does David find out what was said in the last note sent away with the homing bat? What will happen to Groosham Grange if the Unholy Grail is taken to Canterbury Cathedral?Good readers ask questions when they don’t understand something. What questions could you ask when you read:

That David felt a gust of cold air and heard a splintering of wood behind him (p 136)?That David was beginning to feel uneasy (p 137)?That David sees the waxwork of Adolf Hitler and then others closing in around him (p 139-140)?That David has been knocked out by the wax figure of the Duchess of York (p 153)?

Cold air often accompanies black magic, so David should have realised that someone was using black magic near him (and possibly to target him).

David and Vincent are in Mr.

Kilgraw’s

study, along with Mr. Helliwell. David insists Vincent used black magic to steal the statuette. Vincent says he found David knocked out, so he took the statuette & returned to

Groosham Grange first. The 2 teachers rule Vincent has won the Unholy Grail. Mr. Kilgraw

suggests that Groosham

Grange isn’t the right place for David.

That night in bed, David wonders why he mistrusts Vincent. He realises it is because of the East Tower, so he decides to go there to see what he can find. At East Tower, David finds bats and an old book. In the book he reads a poem and realises Vincent wants to use the Unholy Grail to destroy

Groosham

Grange. David manages to read the last note the spy sent. David plans to take this evidence to the Heads. Unfortunately, someone pushes David out of the window. He manages to save himself by grabbing onto the vines on the outside of the tower.

The 2 clues are the cold air and the sound of splintering wood behind David.

The wax works attacking David were: Hitler, a French revolution victim, 2 men in prison uniforms, Jack the Ripper and one of his victims, Al Capone, Doctor Crippen, Attila the Hun, the Duchess of York.

Vincent came along, took the statuette and returned to

Groosham

Grange first.

David goes to the East Tower to figure out what Vincent had been doing there.

He finds a bat, an old book, papers and candles and figures what was said in the last note sent from the tower. He thinks Vincent plans to use the Unholy Grail to destroy GG. He uses a pencil to rub over the indentations on the paper and this reveals what was last written there. Groosham Grange will be destroyed.

Mr. Eliot drives on the wrong side of the road.

Mr. Eliot doesn’t mind being in the wheelchair as he had never liked walking.

Mrs. Eliot has so many false parts it’s hard to tell what she really looks like.

Mildred has hair that could have fallen off a horse; her husband recently died of boredom.

At the funeral, Mildred only stopped talking when one of the undertakers hit her with a spade.

Mr. Eliot couldn’t eat for a month or afford petrol for 3 years after buying his Rolls Royce.

Mrs. Eliot was under the car, fixing it, had oil all over her dress and 2 spanners. She says the car was damaged when Mr. Eliot ran over a cyclist.

Captain Bloodbath has aluminium hands because his hands had been pulled off when David and Jill tried to escape from GG.

Mildred thinks someone else is David. She may have made this mistake because she hasn’t seen David in so many years.

The Bishop of Bletchley is the person the note in the East Tower was sent to, and David knows he wants to destroy GG using the Unholy Grail.

They haven’t listened to him about anything else; they will think he is just jealous and trying another way to get the Unholy Grail after losing it.

Vincent and Mr. Helliwell overheard Jill.

Facts about Mr. Eliot:

Drives on the wrong side of the road

In a wheelchair, didn’t like walking, short, not much hair

Not a good driver, unconcerned about people he might hurt (drove through a playground, through a fence, over a pavement, ran over a cyclist)

Upset with David because David hasn’t won a prize, says he won lots of prizes and would have been punished if he hadn’t, wants to go home/says trip is a waste since David hasn’t won anything

Facts about Mrs. Eliot:

Thinks Mr. Eliot should drive on right side of the road

Has many false parts (teeth, eyelashes, hair, nails)

Electrocutes herself w/ cigarette lighter to prove Mr. Eliot’s point about

Rols

Royce’s reliability

Fixes car (from underneath)

Agrees with people around her (Mr. Eliot. Cpt Bloodbath)

David tells Jill to watch Vincent; David tries to watch Vincent after the prize-giving; when GG starts falling apart, David goes to the East Tower to find Vincent.

Mr. Helliwell comes over to meet David’s parents, he offers to show them around; Mr. Helliwell finds Mildred’s purse for her.

David is trapped between his parents during the prize-giving, so he is unable to look for Jill, who has disappeared. Vincent receives the Unholy Grail. Afterwards, David tries to follow Vincent, but loses him in a crowd of people.

David says good-bye to his parents, who leave with Mildred. Mildred had lost her purse. Mr. Helliwell returns it and it is heavier than it was.

After the Eliot’s leave, David continues looking for Vincent. Suddenly, David notices dust coming from GG and cracks on the walls of the castle. David realises the Grail has left the island and GG is starting to disappear. David goes to the East Tower to find Vincent, but he is overpowered and knocked out by someone whose hands are too big to belong to a student.

Mildred’s bag is heavier because something extra (the Unholy Grail) is in it.

Mildred turns green because Gregor has used real frogs for the ‘toad in the hole’ and she feels sick.

Mr. Eliot thinks he should have beat David more.

Groosham

Grange starts to fall apart.

This is happening because the Unholy Grail has left the island.

David is knocked unconscious by someone he doesn’t see.

David realises Vincent has not been plotting to steal the Grail because Vincent has been caught and is tied up too.

Facts about Vincent: Vincent is good at everything he tries. Vincent won the Unholy Grail; he received it at the prize-giving but someone stole it from him.

Vincent doesn’t’ have parents who care about him – he lived in an institution before GG

Vincent thought he could be happy at GG and wanted to be friends with David, but David wouldn’t let him because David was competing with him

Vincent didn’t care about winning the Grail

Vincent smokes & that was why he was at the East Tower

Vincent & David work together to burn the ropes and set themselves free

Vincent has an idea for getting off the island

Mr. Helliwell has stolen the Unholy Grail.

He was new to the school at the same time as Vincent. David thinks Mr. Helliwell doesn’t like him at first.

Mr. Helliwell is the one who calls the Heads to catch David ‘stealing’ the exam paper. Mr. Helliwell suggest David come to him (Mr. Helliwell) with problems when David has gone to see the Grail.

Mr. Helliwell is the teacher who takes the exam papers, so he could have taken David’s.

Mr. Helliwell is a voodoo teacher, so he could easily animate wax statues.

Mr. Helliwell befriends David’s parents, and he’s the one who finds Mildred’s bag and gives it back to her – the bag that is too heavy, so which probably contains the Grail.

Food is alive (spaghetti and cod); plastic bees buzz around plastic flowers.Revolving doors spin very fastMildred becomes a sumo wrestler; Mr. Eliot turns into a hog; Mrs. Eliot is sent to China. What is causing these things to happen? The Eliots have the Unholy Grail with them.

The children are chased by a dragon because the slide was shaped like a dragon.

The petrol pump shoots bullets because instead of dispensing unleaded petrol it dispenses unpatrolled lead (bullets).

‘Swimming in grease’ is an expression used about greasy food, but in this case it becomes literally true.

The spaghetti looks like worms, so that is how it begins to behave.

Mildred loves all things Japanese so she becomes a Japanese sumo wrestler.

David has landed in front of the Cathedral and has been hurt. One of the towers of the Cathedral is casting a shadow near David.

Mr. Helliwell comes to David, holding the Unholy Grail – he is going to put it into the shadow of the Cathedral tower, which will destroy David and

Groosham

Grange. Mr Helliwell was a black magician who was converted by the Bishop; Mr. Helliwell says he wants to destroy GG because it is evil. David points out that Mr. Helliwell is doing more evil trying to destroy GG than he ever did before as a black magician.

David keeps Mr. Helliwell talking and manages to send his broom up to the Tower. Using the last of David’s magic, the broom cuts the tower in half, which stops the tower from casting a shadow. Mr. Helliwell is killed by part of the Tower falling on top of him.

Mr. Eliot is turned into a hog (pig) because he is a ‘road hog’ (he drives badly and inconsiderately).

Mrs. Eliot is sent to China because she wishes to be many miles away from where she is.

David uses Mrs.

Windergast’s

broom to fly off the island.

The broom stops working because the Unholy Grail is at Canterbury Cathedral. If David had won the Grail, Mr. Helliwell couldn’t have snuck it off the island with David’s parents (and his parents were heading towards Canterbury Cathedral). Mr. Helliwell thinks he is being good by destroying GG, but he does many evil things in the process of trying to stop evil. Good and evil can be complicated!Facts about Mr. Helliwell:

He was a black magician (voodoo specialist) who converted to Christianity and decided to destroy GG.

He hid David’s exam answer, summoned up the wax figures, trapped David in the Head’s office to prevent David winning the Grail because he wanted to use David’s parents to take the Grail off the island

He befriended David’s parents so he could use them to get the Grail off the island

He tied up the children at the East Tower

When he converted, he wanted to do good, but ended up doing evil by ‘crushing and killing’ everyone at GG
