Screening programs were implemented into schools throughout the United States to facilitate early detection and prevent unnecessary back surgery for this abnormality. The efficacy of these screening programs has been debated among scoliosis and screening organizations. Potential harms of screenings include unnecessary follow up visits, increased radiation exposure, and increased costs. Currently, scoliosis screenings are not mandated due to insufficient evidence to assess its benefits and harms. This paper reviews literature to determine how school scoliosis screening programs have evolved, its harms and benefits, and how they could be improved..
