The Beginnings of Modernism The modernist movement arose during the Industrial Revolution . As there was a rapid advance in technology, transportation, and manufacturing, there was a drastic change in the quality of life in American and European countries. People became intrigued with the subconscious mind, dreams, and symbolism, and this soon translated into their art and literature.Artists began to challenge the idea that art had to be depicted in a realistic manner, and experimented with different mediums, colors, and techniques to try to explain what could not be expressed through realism. Writers wanted to break the traditional forms of writing and began experimenting with new forms of expression.

Literary Modernism In the latter half of the 19th century, writers felt that the Victorian morality was incompatible with their way of life. They wanted to break the traditional forms of writing and began experimenting with new forms of expression. Industrialization and new political theory were responsible for the beginning desires to change their forms of expression. The literature after WWI reflected disillusionment and fragmentation.

James Joyce’s Ulysses Written in 1922, Ulysses marked a huge development in Modernist Literature. The novel describes the events of one day in the life of three Dubliners.The writing was lengthy and some parts were controversial, leading the book to be banned in several countries for years.Stream of consciousness is prevalent throughout the book.The writing is filled with thought fragments with the purpose of capturing the thoughts of characters.
