Thesis: Blacksmiths have been one of the most beneficial assets for the growth of America. So much depended on their work, however it's a dying skill in modern day. Mastering the art of blacksmithing takes patience, technique and a lot of trial and error

My Hours In The Shop
Day 1, Hours 1-5: When I first arrived I met with my mentor and went over the safety precautions and general do’s and don’ts about the shop. Shortly after that we ran over how to start the forges fire and getting the coal to burn. For the remainder of the day we worked on the first of
piece of a
fireplace set.
Day 2, Hours 6-10: On day two we really just jumped right into it, throwing on a pair of goggles and went. Starting out with the fire that I built going off of what I had seen the day before. Then cutting the bar stock to length for the second piece to the fireplace set.
Day3, Hours 11-16: This was the day we sat down for an interview and I got a chance to ask my mentor some more questions before getting to work on the final piece of the fireplace set.Slide5
What I’ve learned through the process
Skills
Forge welding- making a seamless bond between two pieces of metal.
How start a forge fire- getting it to a operating temperature
How to start a propane forge- all the buttons and levers to push and in what order

Successes I feel I took very well blacksmithing, finding most everything relatively easy and having a good understanding at the task at hand. My mentor was astounded at how little he had to show me with the time frame that we had.Slide7
Challenges
The biggest challenge to me was having to come up with a new project several weeks in and the slight struggle of finding a mentor. After contacting Zander at Warren Wilson that issue went away. Another challenge was a small scroll at the bottom of the handle.Slide8
Mentor ReflectionMy mentors name Zander
Aloi
the head blacksmith at Warren Wilson Collage. With the time I had he taught me a lot about the art, more so than just hands on. We talked about the history and his experiences and even shared his chips and bought me a coke. He paid great attention to detail with my work and was great at explaining how to fix my mistakes. Zander is not only a great mentor but a truly great friend.Slide9

ConclusionOverall I have really enjoyed this experience, being able to work with my hands and get dirty in the shop. Working with my mentor really taught me a lot about the art of the blacksmith. At the end of the 15 hours I was honestly didn’t want it to end, So much so that my mentor is considering talking to the school about me continuing my apprenticeship. My goal is to have a carrier in the auto industry specializing in welding, being a blacksmith pairs well.Slide12
