“The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers

Watch and listen as your teacher reads a short passage from the

short story

.

As she reads think about:

The other senses the author uses to create the reader’s visualization

What words help you to get that visualization?Slide3

Greg, except for an involuntary tremor in his knees, stood stock-still. The voice was high and brittle, like dry twigs being broken, surely not one he had ever heard before. There was a shuffling sound as the person who had been speaking moved a step closer. Greg turned, holding his breath, his eyes straining to see in the dark room.Slide4

Now you try!

The following paragraph was lifted from the short

story

. Greg

has just met Lemon Brown in an old abandoned apartment building when some neighborhood thugs coming looking for them.

Read

the paragraph and jot down what you visualize. What senses does the author use to help us create that image?Slide5

There was a footstep on the stairs, and the beam from the flashlight danced crazily along the peeling wallpaper. Greg held his breath. There was another step and a loud crashing noise as the man banged the pipe against the wooden banister. Greg could feel his temples throb as the man slowly neared them. Greg thought about the pipe, wondering what he would do when the man reached them – what could he do.Slide6
