Annotating Manuscripts Anonymously MICROSOFT WORD [pre-version 7.0]: Before you turn on “Track Changes” to begin editing: 1. Under “File” in the upper tool bar, select “Properties. a. Select “Summary” and remove any iden tifying features that appear, such as “Author” or “Company. b. Click “OK. 2. Under “Tools” in the upper to olbar, select “Options. a. Select “User Information” and replac e the identity in the “Name” box with something anonymous such as “Reviewer” (note that Word will not accept a blank box for “Name”). b. Click “OK. Alternatively, after you have annotated the

manuscript: 1. Under “Tools” in the upper to olbar, select “Options. a. Select “Security” and ch eck the box “Remove personal information from file properties on save" unde r “Privacy options. b. Click “OK. 2. Then save the file. Note: even if you convert your Word doc to a PDF, identifying features WILL appear in the PDF file properties unless you change them using one of the methods above. ADOBE ACROBAT [Professional; up to version 8.0]: Before you begin adding your reviewer comments or editing the text: 1. Under “Edit” in the upper toolbar, select “Preferences. a. Under “Categories” (the

left column of choices), select “Commenting. i. Under “Making Comments,” uncheck the box “Always use Log-in Name for Author. ii. Click “OK. 2. Insert your first comment [use “Note Tool ,” “Text Edits,” or “Add Sticky Note”]. a. Right-click (Windows) or Control-c lick (Mac OS) the comment or edited text box and select “Properties. i. Under “General,” remove the name that appears under “Author. Leave this field blank or insert something anonymous such as “Reviewer. ii. Click “Close” or “Okay. b. To make this setting a default so th at your identity will continue to be hidden in all subsequent

comments a nd text edits, right-click (Windows) or control-click (Mac OS) the same co mment or edited text box and select “Make Current Properties Default.
