System Rodrigo Antón and Daniel Espinoza Concept The  respiratory system  is the biological system of any organism that engages in gas exchange This serves for us to breath so we can live and do a lot of things. Aylin. Seven. CAUSES OF RESPIRATORY FAILURE. Upper – croup/epiglottis. Lower – bronchiolitis. Lung – pneumonia/ARDS, pulmonary . oedema. Status . Epilepticus. Apnoea. of prematurity. Intoxication. Today our group will talk about care of respiratory system in children .. Night Float Curriculum . 2011. Initial assessment of patient in respiratory distress. Review management of specific causes of respiratory distress. Upper airway obstruction. Lower airway obstruction. Robert Padera, M.D., Ph.D.. HBTM. 235. September 21, 2015. rpadera@partners.org. Goals. To teach you everything something about respiratory physiology and pathology. To set the stage for lecture on lung transplantation. HCT II. Asthma. Respiratory disease usually caused by a sensitivity to an allergen. Dust. Pollen. Animals. Food. Asthma Symptoms. Occurs when bronchospasms narrow openings of bronchioles, Mucus production increases, edema develops in the mucosal lining. Mrs. Hasson. Ms. Golden. Mrs. Lattanzio. Mrs. . Hopkins. 7. th. Science. The Respiratory System. The purpose of the Respiratory System is to bring needed . Oxygen . to the cells and remove the waste product . Dr Iram Tassaduq. INTRODUCTION. The respiratory system consists of paired lungs and a series of air passages that lead to and from the lungs. PORTIONS OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. Air passages of respiratory system consist of two portions. Respiratory System. Air sac. air-filled spaces in the body. alveoli. very small air sacs; where air breathed in goes. Respiratory System. Bronchial tubes. two tubes at the end of the trachea, brings in air from trachea and helps clean lungs; one tube goes to right lung, one to left. Dr. Tara Husain. SIGN. EXTRATHORACIC AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION. INTRATHORACIC-EXTRAPULMONARY AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION. INTRAPULMONARY AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION. PARENCHYMAL PATHOLOGY. Tachypnea. +. +. ++. ++++. Retractions. EXAMINATION OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. The most critical initial question in Pediatrics is whether or not the patient is actually ill. Observation of the patient prior to the actual exam can be tremendously helpful in making this determination.. By: Yazmin Realivasquez. Stephen Huang . Jose Torres. What is ARDS?. ARDS is a respiratory condition characterized by hypoxemia, and stiff lungs, without mechanical ventilation most patients would die. ARDS represents a response to many different insults/injuries and evolves through different phases: alveolar capillary damage to lung resolution to a fibro-proliferative phase. The pulmonary epithelial and endothelial cellular damage is characterized by inflammation, apoptosis, necrosis and increased alveolar-capillary permeability, which lead to the development of alveolar edema. . Pathology. Pathology. COPD. Asthma. Allergic disorder characterized by episodes of wheezing. Bronchiectasis. Emphysema. The progressive loss of lung function due to a decrease in the total number of alveoli, the enlargement of the remaining . Defined as the impairment of the lung’s ability to maintain adequate oxygen and carbon dioxide homeostasis.. Respiratory Failure - Definition. PaO. 2. < 60 mm Hg. and/or. PaCO. 2. > 50 mm Hg. Lungs & Air passages. Responsible for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide (CO. 2. ). 4 – 6 minute supply of oxygen. Includes: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, alveoli, and lungs.
