Lightning occurs when regions of excess positive and negative charge develop within the cloud. Typically, there is a large volume of positive charge in the upper regions of the cloud, and a large negative charge in the center.

Different Kinds of Lightning
These are the three most common kinds of lightning.
Cloud-to-ground Lightning: It is which a cloud initiates the strike causing the discharge to arc downward into the ground.
Ground-to-cloud Lightning: Is when a tall object on the ground that builds up a strike that travels up in the cloud.
Cloud-to-cloud Lightning: It occurs when a bolt arcs between two clouds in the sky without actually reaching the sky.
