3.4.WhyIapplied.TIFRisreputedtobethebestplaceformathematicsresearchwithinIndia.Moreover,IhadbeenhearingabouttheVisitingStudents'ResearchProgrammesincemydaysattheIMOTrainingCamp.IwaskeentoapplytoVSRPforthefollowingreasons:Togetexperienceofdoingresearch/readingworkinoneofIndia'sbestresearchinstitutes,underaleadingresearcherTolearnimportantareasofmathematicsTohavealookatTIFR,anddecidewhetheritwouldbeasuitableplacetoapplytoforGraduateSchool.3.5.Myexperience.Ihaveloggedmyexperienceintheinitialentriesof:http://whatisresearch.blogspot.com3.6.WhatIgainedoutofit.Igainedinthefollowingways:TheVSRPwasmy rstattemptatreadingandtryingtounderstandalongmathematicspa-per.Initially,progresswasslow,buttowardstheend,Imanagedtomastersomeimportantcomponentsofthepaper.Theexperiencehelpedmeunderstandandappreciatewhyresearchandreadingworkoftengoesslowerthanhoped/expected.Ialsodecidedtolearnfrommymistakesandensurethatinfuture,Iwouldnotmakethesamemistakesthatslowedmedowninthebeginning.DuringVSRP,Ialsointeractedwithothermathematicsstudentsfromdi erentbackgroundsandwithdi erentinterests.Ihadfruitfuldiscussionswithsomeofthestudents,particularlyrelatingtosomequestionsingrouptheory.SomeoftheVSRPlecturessetmethinkingalongcertainlines.Forinstance,thereweresomenicelecturesindi erentialgeometry,andtherewasalsoalectureonhowtorandomlyselectpointsfromspaces.IhadmanypersonaldiscussionswithProfessorDipendraPrasadthatnotonlyimprovedmymathematicalknowledgebutalsohelpedmedevelopthenecessarytemperamentalqualities.4
