Protagonist: Ulrich von Gradwitz is the protagonist. He is a man whom inherited forest land from his grandfather. His enemy is Georg Znaeym who enters his land and tries to hunt on his property.Antagonist: The wolves are the antagonists because through the course of events, they come to eat Ulrich and Georg in the climax.

Plot

Georg and Ulrich come face to face with each other with the intent of killing the other

A tree falls on the two due to a storm. They are trapped in the snow, and they decide to become friends

Georg and Ulrich see figures in the distance.

It turns out that the distant figures were wolves

It is implied that the wolves eat Georg and Ulrich

The central conflict in “The Interlopers” is Man vs. Nature. Ulrich and Georg were going to fight, until a gust of wind blew the tree down, causing it to land on Ulrich and Georg. When they were trapped under the tree they still showed their hatred for each other by threatening to kill the other when they get out from under the tree.

Ulrich offers Georg some wine to keep him warm, but he refuses.

While

battling the cold, trapped under the tree, they noticed that their feud was pointless, so they decided to become friends. After making amends, they plan that

After Georg and Ulrich become friends, they see figures off in the distance.Although the two assume that the approaching figures are men that have come to help, they soon realize that they were wolves. “Who are they?” asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the other would gladly not have seen. “Wolves.”

One of the main literary devices in the story is irony. The irony occurs during the rising action, when Ulrich and Georg meet each other with the intent to kill the other. However, through their need to survive, they decided to make up for all their fighting.
