“My first experience with

[term for head lice in Hawaii] was when I got the dreaded call from day camp that my daughter had lice,” Barrie said. “When I left work to get her, she was sitting outside in the line of shame with seven other kids.”
She took immediate action. “I went straight to the drugstore, did the treatment, used the cheap plastic comb, and thought I was done,” Barrie said. “The next day I took her back to day camp, and was sent home again! Day two was the same, and so was day three.”
Barrie and her cousin opened Lice Clinics of America Hawaii in 2016.

Some people find a new business through personal experience while others have a “eureka” moment. For Matt Riley it was a combination of the two. “We had so many neighbors and friends tell us horror stories about head lice,” he said. “When I heard there was a real cure, I knew I had to be involved.”
The fact that traditional home lice treatment products are ineffective is bad news for families, but good news for Lice Clinics of America clinic owners like Matt. “Schools send kids home when they find lice, but parents don’t know what to do,” he said. “They find us after trying the products that don’t work. “Three weeks after our fifth child was born, we found head lice on two of our older daughters,” Erin said. “Life with a three-week old is hard enough, but we had the added challenge of removing lice from our children using over-the-counter products that didn’t work.”
