Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Pollutants (PBT) Program. . methylation. creates . methylmercury. .. Introduction. . Mercury has an affect on everything. Between soil on land, and sediment in water, sediment contains more mercury from being in the contaminated water.  Mercury has a huge effect on organisms. When mercury from power plants goes into the air, the mercury falls from the clouds when it rains, and lands in water, on the ground, and pollutes everything. Mercury affects how quickly organisms move, and makes them less tolerant to diseases, or harmful things. Mercury affects many different systems throughout the organism's body. (Mercury and health). Symbol: Hg. Classified as a heavy metal (in red). Volatile and is a liquid at room temperature (boiling point at 300. o. C). Natural origins: volcanoes . Toxic: as Hg (vapor); methylmercury. USEPA Maximum Contaminant Level: 0.002 ppm in drinking water. Mercury At a Glance.. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and due to its proximity it is not easily seen except during twilight. For every two orbits of the Sun, Mercury completes three rotations about its axis and up until 1965 it was thought that the same side of Mercury constantly faced the Sun. Thirteen times a century Mercury can be observed from the Earth passing across the face of the Sun in an event called a transit, the next will occur on the 9th May 2016.. Metallic Bond – the force that holds metal atoms together. Metals do not form covalent bonds with one another because they do not have enough electrons in their outer shells to form stable octets.. Natural Sources:. Soils and rocks . Wildfires. Man-Made Sources:. Burning coal and medical waste. Manufacturing chemicals. Rain and snow wash mercury out of the environment and into oceans, lakes, and rivers.
