Special Education Service Agency (SESA) Annual Report to Alaska Council of School Administrators Patrick Pillai, Executive Director – Fairbanks, September 2014 Who we are! The Special Education Service Agency (SESA) was established in 1986 by the AK legislature to provide the following special education services: 1. Outreach services to students with low incidence disabilities. 2. Special education instructional support and training of special education personnel. 3. Other services appropriate to special education. Why was the agency created? 1. To assist districts make more special education services available. 2. Encourage cooperation between districts to make special education programs available. 3. Ensure qualified specialists are available to assist districts in the provision of a free and appropriate public education without regard to location in the state. Our core service is supporting school district staff working with students with low incidence disabilities. In addition we operate the following grants:  State Deafblind Grant  Alaska Autism Resource Center  Guiding and Instructing New Special Educators (GAINS)  INDICATORS Project. Data collection for the state.  Alaska Distance Delivery Protocol Project – Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority  PBIS Conference –

Early Intervention Training If you are excited by the services we offer, you will be ecstatic to learn we are a free service to your school district! We are only a referral away … www.sesa.org We have structured our support to match the federal recommendation for three levels of technical assistance based on intensity of service and site communication. 1. Intensive/Sustained Technical Assistance 2. Targeted Technical Assistance 3. General Technical Assistance We utilize an array of technology to serve you! We currently use SKYPE, WEBEX, SMARTBOARD, a website (www.sesa.org), and e-modules designed to meet site needs. In FY 2014 we provided: We interacted with: Of interest to you: 1. FASD Committee 2. Survey to determine baseline knowledge of FASD and the training and resource needs of classroom teachers and teacher aides. 3. David Tarcy (AK Research and Evaluation Services) will be making contact to establish e-mail lists for a census survey.
