1 POMA Pain Management and Opioid Use Policy Established: January 2018 Next Review: February 20 2 0 The Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (POMA ) understands the need to provide effective pain relief and encourages all health care providers to receive training on appropriate opioid prescribing, particularly for patients who suffer from acute and chronic pain. Osteopathic physicians are uniquely qualified to provide non - pharmacologic alter natives to treat pain through the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and POMA advises physicians to consider the safest appropriate treatment for patients. The routine prescription of opioids to treat pain has, in some cases, resulted in addict ion, overdose and death. POMA provides continuing medical education on proper opioid prescribing practices and management of acute and chronic pain, including the application of OMM.
