The speaker of this elegy mourns the loss of her husband and what he represents—security, comfort, and safety—although it is not clear why she has lost his favor or why she is a “friendless exile.” The speaker may have been married to her husband in order to end a dispute between clans, and if the dispute were rekindled, she would have been separated from her husband and banished.
