Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal (Vomhof) pg. 3 Re ports: Twins add righthander Kevin Correia to pitching staff La Vell e E. Neal / Star Tribune – 12/11 /12 According to multiple reports, the Twins have agreed to terms with righthander Kevin Correia on a two - year contract worth about $10 million. Correia, 3 2, was 12 - 11 with a 4.21 ERA last season with the Pirates. For his career, he's 60 - 65 with a 4.54 ERA. He's a command and control pitcher, striking out just 4.7 batters per nine innings last season. He was an All - Star with Pittsburgh. The Twins have been i nterested in Correia in the past, when he was with the Padres from 2009 - 2010. He has made at least 26 starts in each of the past four seasons. He started 28 games last season for the Pirates but also made four appearances out of the bullpen. Correia beat t he Twins last season during interleague play, going 5 1/3 innings during a 7 - 2 victory on June 19. With Corriea, Scott Diamond and Vance Worley, the Twins will have three starters as locks for the 2013 rotation. Worley was acquired last week from Philadelp hia along with prospect Trevor May in exchange for Ben Revere. Prospect Kyle Gibson, healthy after Tommy John surgery early in 2011, also could be part of the rotation. Mientkiewicz rejoins Twins as Fort Myers manager La Velle E. Neal / Star Tribune – 12/ 11 /12 The Twins will have a new manager as part of their minor league staff in 2013, and he's a former fan favorite. Doug Mientkiewicz , the former Twins first baseman who was part of the revival of the franchise in the early 2000s, has been named manager o f Class A Fort Myers of the Florida State League. Mientkiewicz played 12 seasons in the majors, including seven with the Twin s from 1998 - 2004. The Twins traded Mientkiewicz to Boston during the 2004 season, and he went on to win the World Series with the R ed Sox. ~ 2 ~ He gained notoriety after the Series for attempting to keep the ball from the final out, leading to a legal spat with the clu b. The ball is now property of the Hall of Fame after the sides agreed on a compromise. Mientkiewicz, 38, got his start in coaching last year as the hitting coach for the Ogden (Utah) Raptors of the Pioneer League, a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate. The Twins on Monday announced all of their minor league assignments. Gene Glynn will return for his second season as manager of Cla ss AAA Rochester. Jake Mauer moves from Fort Myers to the Twins' new affiliate at Class A Cedar Rapids. Jeff Smith will begin his fourth year as manager of Class AA New Britain. Ray Smith will manage Elizabethton (Tenn.) of the Appalachian League for the 2 7th season. Ramon Borrego enters his fourth season as the manager of the Twins rookie team in the Gulf Coast League. Shooter Now: In Kevin Correia, Twins could get pitcher with something to prove Charley Walters / Pioneer Press – 12/11 /12 If the Minnesota Twins end up signing free - agent pitcher Kevin Correia, as reported by ESPN.com, they'll get a competitor who wants to prove he still can win, Mark Merila said Tuesday morning, Dec. 11. Merila, a former University of Minnesota baseball star, was Correia's bullpen catcher for the two seasons (2009 - 10) Correia started for the San Diego Padres. "He doesn't want the ball taken from him; he wants to go the distance," Merila said. Merila, 41, spent 12 seasons as the Padres' bullpen catcher and now is a major l eague scout for the team. "He's a fastball, slider, changeup guy whose big pitch is the slider," Merila said of Correia, 32. "He used to be one of the 95 (mph) guys, but now I think he's getting down to the 88 - 92 type of guys. But I'm sure he can reach ba ck for one or two pitches if he needs it. "The biggest thing for him now, I'm sure, is that he's getting toward the end of his career and he wants to prove that he sti ll has it. "When he was younger, he definitely was a strikeout guy. I'm sure now he's m ore of a ground ball type of guy who tries to have the infield work for him. And he's a good guy, too." During Correia's two seasons in San Diego, he struck out 257 in 343 innings. His last two seasons, for the Pittsburgh Pirates , he fanned 166 in 325 inn ings. Twins come to terms with right - hander Correia Rhett Bollinger / MLB.com – 12/10 /12 The Twins have agreed to a two - year deal worth $10 million with right - hander Kevin Correia, according to an ESPN.com report. Correia posted a 4.21 ERA with 89 strike outs and 46 walks in 171 innings with the Pirates last season. The 32 - year - old, who had a 51.2 percent ground - ball rate, which ranked tied for seventh in the National League, made 28 starts and four relief appearances in 2012. He has a career 4.54 ERA wit h 712 strikeouts and 381 walks in 1,066 innings. Correia would fill a major need for the Twins, as the club is looking to add starting pitching to a rotation that currently i ncludes only Scott Diamond and Vance Worley, who was acquired by the Twins on Thu rsday in the trade that sent Ben Revere to Philadelphia. ~ 3 ~ K - TWIN picks broadcast vets as new on - air personalities J ohn Vomhof Jr. / Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal – 12/ 10 /12 K - TWIN 96.3 FM on Monday announced three new on - air personalities: KARE - TV Channel 11 anchor and reporter Rena Sarigianopoulos and local radio veterans Brian "B.T."
