Slide2Nosocomial infections affect about 4% of all hospital patients , but this rate rises to 9-20% in case of ICU patients .
ICU
acquired infections account for about 50% of all hospital acquired infections.
The
reason for higher rates of infections in the ICUs are : Interventions & indwelling devices , poor nutritional status of the patients , sepsis induced
immunoparesis , colonization with MDR germs due to use of broad spectrum antibiotics etc, Hand hygiene is the most important intervention which can prevent health care associated infections to a large extent
Slide3Hand hygiene has been put on the priority list as the goal of infection control by both WHO ( World Health Organization) & CDC ( Center for Disease Control) .
Although WHO has prescribed simple precise schema for hand hygiene , it still remains one of the most difficult goals to achieve . The adherence rate varies from 40% to 60%
