U. S. Government vs. Apple In 2015, Syed Rizwan Farook committed a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California. As part of the investigation to determine if there was further threat to U.S. citizens, the FBI believed Mr. Farook’s phone and GPS system contained vital information on known whereabouts and contacts in and outside the U.S. The FBI ordered Apple to write code to access this information and turn it over to the FBI to access Mr. Farook’s phone; however, Apple fought the FBI on the grounds that it violated the First Amendment on free speech. Further, it would provide the FBI a permanent way to bypass their password protection and putting their millions of customers privacy at risk.

U. S. Government vs. Apple (cont.) Do you believe the FBI has the right to order companies to turn over information or create coding to solve matters that could protect human lives? Did Apple do the right thing in standing up to the FBI denying them the information they requested? What would be the consequences of either decision? How did it get resolved?
