Chapter 1: “The Sound and the Shell”

Other Main Events:

The boys plane crashes and a group of boys ages 6-12 are stranded on an island with no adults.

They originally try to follow order and establish rules to help them survive. Piggy and Ralph find the conch, Piggy deduces how to use the conch, Ralph blows in it to call a meeting.

At the meeting Piggy tries to take role, Ralph gets elected leader, even though Jack clearly wanted the job.

Ralph, Jack, and Simon go to explore the island, while exploring they find a pig trapped in the vines, and can’t summon the nerves to kill it. Slide4

Chapter 2: “Fire on the Mountain”

Main Events:

1. Ralph, Jack, and Simon return and blow the conch to call another meeting. Here they explain that they’re on an island, with no adults, and no way of getting off.

Some of the boys, like Piggy, are really distraught by this news.

2. Ralph decides that they should build a signal fire to help them get rescued, and puts Jack and his choir in charge. All the boys race up the mountain, and start the fire using Piggy’s glasses.

3. Their fire quickly catches and gets out of control and burns most of the forest, where one of the

littluns

was thought to be. Slide5

Chapter 3: “Huts on the Beach”

1. Jack, now in charge of hunting, comes back to the beach disappointed not to catch anything. Ralph and Simon are down on the beach building huts, and are disappointed that the choir is using hunting as an excuse to get out of chores that will help the greater good.

2. Tensions build as Jack wants to hunt, and Ralph wants to build shelters.

3. In the meantime we are introduced to Simon. We see him building huts, helping the little children reach fruit high in the trees, and go mediate in a lush green spot in the forest. Slide6

Allegory

This story is an allegory which means all the

people

, things and actions represent an idea or generalization about life; allegories often have a strong moral lesson

.Often, characters in allegories personify some abstract quality.Slide7

Today we’ll look at Characters

In your groups you need to locate quotes and evidence about your assigned character:

You need to understand who they are and what they stand for.

You will have today and tomorrow to complete a body biography, that you will present to the class on Thursday. Slide8

In your groups you will be assigned one character: Ralph, Jack or Piggy
