Mobs in Minecraft.Slide2

First, the peaceful mobs.Slide3

Cows are by far the best passive animal to hunt for survival, especially in the early stages of the game.

Upon death, cows will drop 0-2 pieces of leather, 1-3 pieces of raw beef and experience orbs worth a total of 1-3 experience points. Like other meat dropping animals, the cow’s meat is cooked when they die by fire.

Cows will also supply the player with milk when they’re right clicked while holding a bucket. There’s no limit or timer on how often you can milk a cow.

Pigs are passive mobs found throughout the Overworld, though they only spawn in light levels of 9 and higher.

Upon death a pig will drop 0-2

porkchops

and experience orbs, which grant the player 1-3 experience points. If a pig dies while being on fire, a pig will drop 0-2 cooked

porkchops

instead.

PigSlide5

Chicken

Chickens are one of the more useful passive mobs in the game, due to their low health, decent spawn rates and good drops. Chickens drop 0-2 feathers and 1 raw chicken when they’re killed. They will also drop experience orbs, granting the player 1-3 experience points. Like other meat dropping mobs, their meat is cooked if they die by fire.

In addition to drop items on death, chickens will also drop eggs while being alive. This happens randomly every 5 to 10 minutes.Slide6

Mooshroom

A

mooshroom

is a rare type of cow that only spawns in mushroom biomes. They’re red and white, with red mushrooms growing on their backs

.

Like normal cows, mooshrooms drop 0-2 pieces of leather, 1-3 pieces of raw beef (or cooked beef if it dies by fire) and experience orbs worth a total of 1-3 experience

.

As well as being able to milk them by right clicking them while holding a bucket,

mooshrooms

can also be right clicked while holding an empty bowl, which will give you a bowl of mushroom stew. There is no limit or timer on how often you can ‘milk’ them. This makes the

mooshroom

an excellent mob to have around monster arenas and experience farms

.

It’s also possible to shear the

mooshroom

, causing it to drop 5 red mushrooms. The

mooshroom

will then turn into a normal cow and won’t change back.Slide7

Sheep

Sheep are passive mobs

fround

throughout the Overworld, though they can only spawn on grass and only in light of level 9 or higher. Killing a sheep will cause it to drop 1 piece of wool and experience orbs worth a total of 1-3 experience points, however, shear a sheep will give you 1-3 pieces of wool. Once sheared the sheep will (eventually) eat grass and regain its wool, so you can shear it again. Sheep are most likely the only mob you don’t want to kill, as they could be worth more to you alive.Slide8

Ocelot

The ocelot or jungle cat, is a passive mob unique to the jungle biomes. These shy cats roam the jungles and can be hard to tame. Their speed and the thick jungle foliage makes it hard to chase them while they slip through gaps and hide behind bushes or trees

.

When killed, ocelots only drop experience orbs, which give you a total of 1-3 experience points. However, ocelots will attack and kill chickens, so killing them could be worthwhile if your chickens are near a jungle farm

.

Ocelots

are most

likely

the only mob you don’t want to kill, as they could be worth more to you alive.Slide9

Squid

Squid are the only water dwelling mob in

minecraft

and can spawn in any large enough body of water, in any biome, in any light level and on any game difficulty level. However, only between height levels 45 and 62. It’s not uncommon to find a squid in your pool or pond

.

Squid drop 1-3 ink sacks and experience orbs worth a total of 1-3 experience points. Ink sacks are used to dye sheep and to create a book and quill.Slide10

Villagers

Villagers,

squidwards

,

testificates

or one of the many other nicknames that have been given to this odd looking mob, are the inhabitants of the randomly generated villages you can find around minecraft

.Killing a villager will not cause it to drop anything, not even experience. A new villager may spawn, but only if the size of the village allows it.Slide11

Horse

Horses and donkeys spawn in plains and

savannas

in the Overworld in herds of as few as 2 individuals. Horse herds seem to be somewhat rarer than groups of other passive animal mobs such as cows or sheep. Donkey herds are even more uncommon. There is little variation within naturally spawned herds; foals may spawn alongside adult horses, but coat types all tend to be similar. For normal horse herds, the animals will have the same base coat

color

, though markings may differ.

Mules, skeleton horses, and undead horses do not spawn naturally. Mules can be acquired through breeding. Currently, undead horses and skeleton horses can only be brought into the game with the /summon command.

All horses will roam idly, occasionally stopping to rear, swish their tails, or lower their heads as though eating the grass. Unlike sheep, the eating animation does not actually cause any grass to be consumed. If a player comes near, the horses may turn to look at them. Any horse, even a wild one, will allow itself to be attached to a lead without protest. However, if the player attempts to saddle an untamed horse, it will rear and flail its front hooves, though this causes no damage to the player. Horses remain passive even when hit. The appearances of the undead and skeleton horses suggest that they could possibly be intended as hostile mobs, but at this time they are completely passive if spawned.

Horses will also open their mouths and make noises that depend on the particular horse’s variation. Normal horses make neighs and whinnies, while donkeys and mules, which use the same audio, emit brays. Skeleton horses make various metallic sounds. Zombie horses make several ominous moaning sounds

.Slide12

Bat

Bats sleep during the day and become active at night. A bat will hang upside down when it is idle, but once the player approaches, the bat will fly away. Bats cannot hang on transparent or non-solid blocks. When placed in a

minecart

, bats can move the

minecart

around on their own.

Bats will squeak (similar to its real life function of echolocation). By listening for bat squeaks, the player might sometimes be able to find caverns, which can be useful for obtaining resources.Although the bat is a passive mob, they still

despawn

when going too far away, like hostile mobs or Ocelots, Squids, and Zombie

Pigmen

.

Bats do not seem to care about lava, and if there are lava streams coming from the ceiling, they may fly into one and burn up. Most bats, however, are safe from lava, both because lava streams are uncommon and because lava gives off light, and bats spawn in the dark.Slide13

Secondly , the hostile mobs.Slide14

Blazes

Blazes are flying pillars of smoke, surrounded by 12 rods that rotate around their ‘body’. They also have a yellow face, which is pretty much a recolored ‘Steve’. When a blaze dies, it’ll drop 0-1 blaze rod, but only if it’s killed by a player. It also drops 10 experience points.Slide15

Cave Spiders

Cave spiders are similar to normal spiders, but smaller and blue-

ish

grey in

color

. In addition to their small size, which allows them to pass through any gap that’s half a block high and 1 block wide, the attack of a cave spider will also poison you, though this does not happen on easy difficulty

.When a cave spider is killed, it’ll drop 0-2 pieces of string and 0-1 spider eye. The string is always dropped, no matter how it dies, while the spider eyes are only dropped when the spider is killed by a player. Like most hostile mobs, a cave spider will drop 5 experience points in the form of orbs.Slide16

Creepers

By far the most dreaded and hated monster in

minecraft

. The creeper has caused more destruction and anger than any other mob in

minecraft

. Creepers are unique in the way they attack. Unlike all other mobs, the creeper doesn’t attack you with anything. It will try to get close to you and explodes

.Upon death, a creeper will drop 0-2 lumps of gunpowder, but only when they’re killed by something other than themselves. It will also drop 5 experience points worth in orbs. If a creeper is killed by a skeleton, one of the 11 music discs is dropped, which is the easiest way to get them. Note that a skeleton only has to get the killing blow, any damage done before that can be done by the player or other sources. For tips and tricks on how to get the music discs, click here.Slide17

Ghasts

The high pitched cries of the

ghasts

are often the first thing you hear when you enter the Nether. These white, floating, jellyfish-like creatures can be a real pain to deal with

.

Upon death, a

ghast will drop 0-2 pieces of gunpowder, 0-1 ghast tear and 5 experience points worth in orbs. Due to their nature to keep their distance from players while attacking and their natural ability to float, these drops can often end up falling in lava or off of a cliff.Slide18

Magma Cubes

Magma cubes are basically the slimes of the Nether, but they differ from slimes in several ways. Besides their obvious difference in appearance, magma slimes also move differently. Instead of hopping like slimes, magma cubes separate into 8 different layers when they jump to move forward, somewhat resembling a spring

.

When a large or small magma cube dies, it can drop 0-1 Magma cream. They also drop experience points, which vary per size. A big cube drops 4 experience points, a medium cube drops 2 and a small cube drops 1 point. However, like slimes, a large and medium cube can split into smaller versions when it dies. Each cube will split into 2-4 smaller versions, which means you can earn a maximum of 36 points for killing a large magma cube and each of its smaller versions. The minimum amount you will earn is 16 experience

points

.Slide19

Silverfish

Silverfish are small, hostile mobs that look more like a strange caterpillar than a fish. They drop nothing when they’re killed, which just makes them more annoying to deal with.Slide20

Skeletons

Skeletons were the first projectile firing mobs added to

minecraft

. With their bow and arrow they can put up a good fight, though they generally shouldn’t be too difficult to deal with

.

When killed, a skeleton will drop 0-2 bones and 0-2 arrows. On top of that there’s a

small chance it drops a bow, with an even smaller chance of that bow being enchanted with Power I. Note that rare drops will only drop if the player kills the skeleton. This makes skeletons a very useful mob to farm. Arrows can take a long time to create on your own and bones can be turned into

bonemeal

, which instantly grows trees and crops

.

Skeletons are also used to get music discs. If the killing blow on a creeper is done by a skeleton, the creeper will drop 1 of 11 music discs.Slide21

Slimes

Slimes are green, gelatinous blocks that come in 3 sizes, large, medium and tiny. Unlike most hostile mobs, slimes can spawn in any light level.

When killed, tiny slimes drop 0-2 slime balls. Slime balls are used to create sticky pistons and magma cream. Large slimes drop 4 xp, medium slimes drop 2 xp and tiny slimes drop 1 xp point.

When large and medium slimes are killed, they’ll split up into 2-4 smaller versions. So 1 large slime could turn into 4 medium slimes, which could turn into 16 tiny slimes. This means 1 large slime will drop between 0 to 32 slime balls and 12 to 28 xp points.Slide22

Spiders

Spiders are one of the most agile mobs in

minecraft

and can often wait for a player before ambushing them. They’re one of the wider sized mobs in

minecraft

. They’re 2 blocks wide and long, and 1 block tall.

Once killed a spider will drop 0-2 string and 5 xp points. It could also drop a spider eye, but only if the killing blow comes from a player. Spider eyes are used in brewing and create potions with a negative effect. String is used to make bows and wool, though farming sheep is much more effective for wool.Slide23

Spider jockeys

A spider jockey is the rare, but deadly combination of a spider and a skeleton, with both their strengths and weaknesses

.

Killing the spider will cause it to drop 0-2 strings, 0-1 spider eye and 5 experience points. Killing the skeleton will cause it to drop 0-2 bones, 0-2 arrows, 5 experience points and there’s a chance it drops a bow, which could be enchanted with Power I, though this is extra rare

.

Note that the spider eye and bow can only be dropped if they mob is killed by the player.Slide24

Zombies

Zombies are one of the easiest mobs to kill and defend yourself against in

minecraft

. They closely resemble the default player skin, though, of course, dead and rotten

.

When killed, a zombie will drop 0-2 pieces of rotten flesh and 5 experience points. There’s also a rare chance they drop either an iron ingot, iron helmet, iron shovel or iron sword. Note that rare drops will only drop if the player kills the zombie

.Their drops make them one of the more useless mobs in

minecraft

. Even though rotten flesh can be eaten, there’s an 80% chance it gives you food poisoning, which will drain your food bar by about 2. However, eating large amounts of rotten flesh will still only drain your food bar by 2, if you get food poisoning. It’s also possible to cure yourself by drinking milk.Slide25

Chicken Jockey

Chicken Jockeys run around like baby zombies, instead of using the chicken AI.

Even though the zombie AI is used, the chicken still randomly lays eggs.

Chicken Jockeys will not avoid bumping into walls that would potentially suffocate the baby zombie.

Chicken Jockeys do not take fall damage, as the chicken flaps its wings quickly, slowing the falling speed.

The chicken moves at the speed of the baby zombie, which is much faster than a normal chicken.

Chicken Jockeys can track the player over a very large distance.

Like zombies, Chicken Jockeys will also track villagers.

Although a Chicken Jockey's

hitbox

is 3 blocks tall, the chicken can still run through 1 block high gaps. If the above block is solid, the Baby Zombie will take suffocation damage

.Slide26

The boss mobs.Slide27

The Ender Dragon

The Ender dragon is the most difficult monster to kill and it takes a very long time to do so. The dragon’s health is 100 hearts, which means it would have to be hit over 20 times with a fully drawn bow. However, inside the End are Ender crystals on top of huge obsidian

pilars

which will heal the dragon when it flies close enough, so destroying them first is highly recommended and pretty much a requirement when you’re on your own

.

The Ender dragon attacks by flying against you, which not only does 5 hearts worth of damage, it also pushes you back a lot. It can easily push you off of an obsidian pilar, which will kill you through fall damage alone. Wearing a full set diamond armour is almost a must as it will absorb 80% of the damage

.

The Ender dragon is capable of flying through all blocks, which will destroy those blocks on impact, with the exception of end stone, bedrock and obsidian. Large amounts of obsidian are advised, though not necessary, to create an

understructable

path to the top of the obsidian pillars. Anything else often ends up being destroyed by the dragon, leaving you without a fast way back down

.

When the Ender dragon dies, it’ll start to

disolve

in mid air while beams of light shine out from within it’s body. After it has

disolved

, it’ll explode into 20.000xp points worth in orbs. A portal will also be created on the land directly under him. The portal has a dragon egg resting on a pilar in the middle of it. The portal will lead you back to the

Overworld

.Slide28

Wither

The Wither is hostile to the player and all mobs except undead mobs (Skeletons, Zombies, Zombie

Pigmen

, Wither Skeletons and other Withers). When provoked by a skeleton or another Wither, they will only remain hostile toward each other for a moment before returning to friendly status. If spawned in the End, it will prefer to attack any nearby Endermen, but will attempt to pursue and attack the Ender Dragon if there are no nearby targets

.

The Wither can become very dangerous quickly. Upon noticing a mob, the Wither attacks them with a projectile called the “Wither Skull”. Wither Skulls move slowly and inflict a status effect called "Wither"(Wither II from the boss) on Normal and Hard difficulties. This effect is similar to Poison, except that it can kill the player and turns the health bar black, making it difficult to tell at a glance how many hearts are still full. Although some may consider this cheating, it is possible to modify the withering hearts texture to stand out better. When attacking a Player, the Wither will fly above it, making melee attacks difficult.

Each head fires independently, allowing a Wither to attack up to three different mobs at the same time. Withers need at least 5 block high airspace to fit. They can not be trapped and suffocated in smaller rooms. Every few seconds, the Wither will break any block that comes into contact with it, except Bedrock and End Portal Frames. These blocks are unbreakable by any conventional means, each having a blast resistance of 18,000,000, though in creative mode it is possible to break them.Slide29

The player created mobs.Slide30

Iron golems

Iron golems are large, strong robot-like monsters, which resemble the villagers. Their purpose is to defend the villagers from any hostile mob, this includes the player if the player attacks any of the villagers

.

Killing an iron golem won’t give you any experience, despite it being one of the hardest mobs to defeat, this is because iron golems can be crafted. Iron golems will drop 3-5 iron ingots and 0-2 roses though, but due to their high health, strong attack and the rarity of villages, farming iron golems isn’t very effective without boosting and automating their spawn rate.Slide31

Snow

golems

Snow golems or snowmen, are player-created mobs, which are made by stacking 2 snow blocks and placing a pumpkin on top if it. The pumpkin has to be placed last for it to work. A

jack-o-lantern

also works, but this doesn’t change the appearance of the golem. They cannot be created using pistons, as pumpkins cannot be pushed by them.

Because snow golems can be created, they won’t drop any experience orbs when they’re killed, they do drop 0-15 snowballs however.Slide32

Lastly, the

neutral mobs.Slide33

Endermen

Endermen always initially spawn in pairs, but will often appear individually or in larger groups due to random teleportation. Endermen will mostly teleport away when they take damage. They take damage from contact with water or rain, upon which they will immediately teleport in search of dry areas.[1] In rain they can be seen teleporting rapidly as they search for shelter, but can often die from rain damage. Taking damage from an attacking player will cause them to teleport behind the player and attempt an attack, unless the player is looking at the

Enderman's

legs, which will usually prevent teleportation.

Endermen are neutral mobs that don't attack unless provoked, although looking at their bodies or upper legs from up to 64 blocks away is considered provocation. When provoked, Endermen will open their mouths and shake with rage (this happens somewhat rarely on the

xbox

edition). Staring at their torso will stop them from moving, and you can approach and attack, at which point they will teleport behind you. Provoking an

Enderman

will cause the player to hear a lengthy, threatening sound. If an aggravated

Enderman

is hit by another mob, for example, a Skeleton or the Ender Dragon, it will cease attacking the player

.Slide34

Zombie

Pigman

Zombie

Pigmen

often spawn in groups of 4. However, groups can merge and form an even bigger group. They spawn twice as much as Ghasts in The Nether. When idle, Zombie

Pigmen

move relatively slowly, but when attacked their speed will significantly increase. Also be very wary of attacking one since all other zombie pigmen in a 32 block radius will be alarmed and also turn hostile towards you. Also, if you approach an already hostile Pigman it will perform the same hostility trigger as it attacks you, making hostile Pigman swarms easily formed. It is commonly believed that zombie

pigmen

will become neutral after 400–799 ticks (20–40 seconds), however this isn't true; they remain hostile until they

despawn

or are killed, much like aggressive wolves.

If provoked they will make an aggressive noise every 0 to 39 ticks. Zombie

Pigmen

sometimes catch fire during the day, but it is immediately extinguished. It is because a Zombie Pigman is actually a modified zombie, and zombies catch fire during daylight and die, while Zombie

Pigmen

are immune to fire. Unlike zombies, Zombie

Pigmen

do not bang on or break doors (even when hostile), nor do they attack villagers.Slide35

Wolf

Wild wolves have white fur, a drooping tail, and their eyes consist of one white pixel, black pupils, They are neutral towards the player and spawn untamed in packs of 1-8, occasionally coordinating attacks on nearby sheep while roaming around. When a wild wolf attacks a sheep, they will appear to become hostile, but will not attack the player. When the sheep dies, they will look like normal wild wolves again. Randomly dropped blocks of wool can be good indications of their presence. Untamed wolves will tilt their head to the side to indicate their interest in a bone or meat held by a nearby player. Untamed wolves will become hostile toward the player if the player attacks them.

Hostile wolves can be distinguished by their constant growling and appearance: the tail becomes straight, the eyes become red and the contrast level of the fur increases, revealing dark patches of bristling hair and a mouth line raised in a slight snarl. They will coordinate their attacks on a player that has injured a wild wolf in the pack, and will not revert from this state once aggravated, unless the player dies and

respawns

. If a wolf is hit and becomes hostile, but then takes fall damage, it will stay hostile, but not attack. Tamed wolves cannot become aggravated. Aggravated wolves will attack any and all players in range. They also use this appearance when attacking sheep, but once the sheep is killed or out of their range, they will change back into their wild appearance. One glitch in

minecraft

PC is if you spawn a sheep next to a hostile wolf it will kill the sheep and turn

neutral
