“Worship
is like
this:
one foot in heaven with the other here on earth. What brings heaven into our earthly worship is not dependent on the elaborateness of the service or the sincerity of our devotion. Rather, it is because of the One who is present in our worship that we experience heaven on earth. If worship is "heaven on earth," then it stands to reason that what we do and say in worship should in some sense give us a foretaste of that great feast to come.”
Worship is like no place else in this world.
But there is one place that it does resemble, and that is heavenSlide3

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God and before His Church to
restore
the union of Christ and His Body, the church. A unity we find represented in marriage.
Marriage
is an honorable estate instituted and blessed by God in Paradise, before humanity's fall into sin.
In marriage we see a picture of the communion between Christ and His bride, the Church. Our Lord blessed and honored marriage with his presence and first miracle at Cana in Galilee. This estate is also commended to us by the apostle Paul as good
and honorable. Slide13
Therefore
, marriage is not to be entered into inadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.
The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for the mutual companionship, help, and support that each person ought to receive from the other, both in prosperity and adversity. Marriage was also ordained so that man and woman may find delight in one another. Therefore, all persons who marry Slide14
shall
take a spouse in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust, for God has not called us to impurity but in holiness. God also established marriage for the procreation of children who are to be brought up in the fear and instruction of the Lord so that they may offer Him their praise.
For these reasons God has established the holy estate for us to enter.Slide15
P
Let us pray.
Almighty, everlasting God, our heavenly Father, grant that by Your
blessing we all may live together according to Your Word and promise. Strengthen us in faithfulness and love towards each other. Sustain and defend us
in every trial and temptation. Help
us to live in faith toward You, Slide16
in
the communion of Your holy Church, and in loving service to each other that
we
may ever enjoy Your heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.C Amen.Slide17

Genesis 2:7, 18–24
7
Then the L
ORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19
So out of the ground the L
ORD
God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man
to see what he would call them. Slide19
Genesis 2:7, 18–24
And
whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
20The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. Slide20
Genesis 2:7, 18–24
22
And the rib that the L
ORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23Then the man said,“This at last is bone of my bonesand flesh of my flesh;she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Slide21
Ephesians 5:1–2, 22–33
Walk in Love
1
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.Wives and Husbands
22
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
24
Now as the church submits to
Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.Slide22
Ephesians 5:1–2, 22–33
25
Husbands
, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
28
In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own
bodies. Slide23
Ephesians 5:1–2, 22–33
He
who loves his wife loves himself.
29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30because we are members of his body. 31“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
32
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
33
However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.Slide24

Matthew 19:4–6
4
He answered,
“Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh’? 6
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Slide26
Apostles' Creed
C
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.Slide27
Apostles' Creed
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
,
and the life
T
everlasting. Amen.Slide28
The Sixth Commandment
You shall not commit adultery.
What does this mean?We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.Slide29

Marriage has real and living consequences determined by God who instituted it
For the couple learning to live/love together
For the countless generations that come from their marriageSlide44
Marriage as a vocation:
God works in and through the couple to accomplish His purposes – both in their lives and in the lives of others.
Marriage is a tangible, living, breathing manifestation of God’s love and purpose for us.
It is a tool within His hands. Each spouse is God’s gift to the other.Slide45
Marriage is a central theme in Scripture
When was Creation finished?
Genesis 2:22
How does the Bible end?
Revelation 21:2Slide46
Is Marriage a cultural construction?
Matthew 19:4-6
God’s roles and functions within marriage.
It is God who joins a man and woman into 1 fleshGod is still joining together – giving us vocationsWe all have a unique story of how, but it is always God who called and joined us together.
Then is it something which we can legislate?
Human government has not been given that authoritySlide47
1 Corinthians 6:16
Sex creates 1 flesh – must not be taken lightly
Not only body and blood but everything that outwardly pertains to the physical life (all that you have)
Ephesians 5:28-291 flesh deals with love in a broad sense1 Corinthians 7:3-5They have 1 bodyNOT 1 soulNOT 1 personalitySlide48
Genesis 2:18-23
At first there was 1 flesh
From 1 body God made 2
Then He made them 1 againOther animals unable to fulfill that role – 2:20
Adam was allowed to participate in God’s provision of his need through his own sacrifice – His body was broken.
What was Adam’s response? (v. 23)Slide49
Is there that 1 special person in the world that we are to seek out? Our ideal “soul mate?”
No.
After
you are married, you should consider your spouse is the one God brought to you and so is the one he made for you.Marriage involves common work, hence “help.” Husband and wife work together. Yes, husband and wife can also drag each other down (just look at Genesis 3) but their oneness endures just as Adam and Eve’s marriage survived the fall.Slide50
Ephesians 5:31-32
If husband and wife are one flesh…then what does this signify?
1 John 4:2
John 1:14Jesus left His Father to be permanently united with his bride, the church – you and me and all believers!1 Corinthians 12:27The Sacraments “embody” us into ChristRomans 6:3-5We are crucified, buried and resurrected with Christ
1 Corinthians 10:16-17
Christians have a one-flesh relationship with other ChristiansSlide51
So, how are we called to live out our married life?
It involves responding to that gospel of Christ’s own sacrifice – this is the essence of our vocation in marriage.
What about divorce?
Matthew 19:8 – “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed [divorce] but from the beginning it was not so.”Divorce rips us apart – a rending of the flesh.Divorce is permitted in the cases of adultery for one side has already ripped the flesh apartIt is not an absence of law…but it is an absence of the gospel- when there is no forgiveness. It is a rejection of God’s gracious gift – the husband no longer plays the role of Christ to his wife or the wife ceases to emulate the churchSlide52
When a marriage has come apart the heart has hardened against the spouse. One or both begin to say no to God’s calling
Healing is needed in order to forgive and healing takes time.
The rending of one flesh becomes a cross you must bear…but it is also the crucifixion on the cross which provides the healing needed.Slide53
“When couples
discern Christ and his church in their marriage
, when the husband and wife respond to him accordingly, their entire marriage becomes a fruit of their faith in Christ.
So conscious are they of their own forgiveness in Christ that forgiveness for each other comes naturally. They no longer have a hard heart toward each other. Their oneness with Christ makes possible the oneness they have with each other.”Slide54

OFFERING
The Offering is a time of worship like the hymns and prayers. There are important attitudes that make Christian giving worshipful giving such as first fruits giving, cheerful giving, thoughtful giving, giving in response to God’s blessings, etc. Behind Christian giving is also this crucial understanding–everything that we have is God’s. We merely manage what God already owns.Slide59
P In joyful confidence that our heavenly Father hears our requests and answers them according to His good and gracious will, let us pray for the Church, the flock redeemed by Christ the crucified, and for the needs of all people.
P Almighty God, Your Son Jesus instructed His disciples to show mercy, even as He was merciful. Grant to Your faithful people compassionate hearts, that they love one another in all humility. Put away from them the temptations of the flesh, especially pride and jealousy, that they may be filled with mercy and gentleness, serving the least among them. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer. P You have commanded Your church to pray for laborers for the harvest. Instill in the young men in our congregations a love for Your name, that from their number You might raise up some to serve as pastors to Your flock. Give receptive hearts to older men as well to consider serving in Your church, and bless their studies that they may faithfully deliver the Word of truth. Lord, in Your mercy,C hear our prayer.
Slide60
P Gracious God, in the Holy Supper of Your Son’s body and blood You give us a foretaste of the feast to come as You bestow on us Your immeasurable gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. By Your word and Spirit unite in true faith all who this day receive Your Son’s body and blood, that they may proclaim Christ’s death until He comes. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P
Lord God, grant wisdom to all those who are elected or appointed to positions of authority at every level of our government. Protect them from the temptations of pride and self-importance, instilling in them a strong sense of duty to their country. Defend especially those who serve in our armed forces. Give them honor in their service and protection from every enemy of both body and soul. Lord, in Your mercy,C hear our prayer.
P You, O Lord, are the creator and preserver of all things. Teach us to rightly cherish the life that you grant to each of us. Enable us to be faithful witnesses to this faithless world, especially as we promote a culture of life that acknowledges every child conceived in the womb and the intrinsic value of every person, including the aged and the infirm. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
Slide61
P Send Your healing hand upon those who suffer from illnesses both great and small [
especially
__________]. Give patience especially to those who are afflicted with chronic conditions. Bless all who care for the sick, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and nursing-home attendants, that they may find fulfillment in their callings. Grant an extra measure of endurance to family members who spend their days caring for loved ones, giving them opportunities to attend as well to their own needs. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer. P Lord God almighty, we offer You our adoration for the saints who daily took up their cross and followed You [especially for those who have recently died ____________]. Comfort those grieving for the presence of loved ones, and guide us on the path that all the saints walked, which leads to the final, endless day of Your bright glory. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Father, the Source of all life and the life that never ends, receive our prayers this day that we offer to You in the name of Your beloved Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.Slide62

…Slide65
Oh yes, we see all of her warts and blemishes: the petty bickering over trivial matters, the deep disagreements on more weighty issues, and the painful ways in which we sometimes treat one another. Yet, by our common confession of the truth, we are one in Christ. As Christ gives himself to us in this holy meal, he strengthens that unity and bids us love one another with a deep and abiding love. How can it be any other way, as we are sent from the table with the blessing to depart in peace?”Slide66
