T he most fundamental principle defining credible elections is that they reflect the free expression of the will of t he people. Through the Tanzania Electoral P rocess Observation (TEP O ) activity , USAID will support Research and Education for Democracy in Tanzania (REDET) to undertake processional and ob jective domestic observation of Tanzania ’ s 2020 G eneral E lec tion. With USAID assistance, REDET will recruit , train, and de ploy b oth long and short - term domestic election observers to monitor the planning , administration, and conduct of elect ions. Tanzania Twit ter: @USAI DTanzania T he TEPO activity aims to observe , on behalf of the citizens of Tanzania , the 20 20 Tanzania (Union) an d Zanzibar Genera l Electi ons process in constituencies across t he country. These efforts will estab lish the extent to which these elections are credible , fre e, fair, peaceful , a nd adhere to national legislat ion and in ternationa l standards for genuine democratic elections. The activity support s professional , impartial and objective election observation , and seek s to promot e both transparency and accountability as well as potentially enhancing publ ic confidence and trust in the el ectoral processes and it s outcomes . T hese interventions play an important r ole in promot ing and protect ing the civil and political rights of the electorate and contestants , as it may lead to the ident ification and correcti on of errors or irregularities , and det er manipulation , fraud, or expose such problems if they do occur. Finally , through the submission of well - informed recommendations to follow observation efforts, the TEPO activity wil l contri bute to improve ment in the management and quality of future elections in o rder to meet acceptable universal standards for democratic elections. EXPEC TED RESU LTS • Recruit, train and deploy 160 Long - term Observers , and 3, 100 Short - term Observer s t o observe the 2020 Tanzania (Union) an d Zanzibar Genera l Electi ons process in 160 constituencies across Tanzania . • I ssue timely public r eports and sta temen ts on the 2020 General Elections , detailing : adhere nce to national legislations , and u niversal princip les and qualities of genuine democratic elections ; the fairness in the allocation and use of relevant state resources ; and the exte nt to which the el ections met the benchmark of credible , free, and fair. • D issemina te key recommendations to electoral stakeh olders , based on observation findings, for improvements in elect oral planning and management. • Improved transparen cy and increased citizen awareness of Tanzania ’ s 2020 General E lection.
