1. poverty andFresno State’s Physical Therapy Department Shoe Drive and Foot Health Education Obrero, Catherine SPT, Roos, Jennifer PT DPT GCS, Sarmento, Caio PT, PhDDepartment of Physical TherapyCalifornia State University, FresnoCommunity Project BackgroundThe small rural town of Firebaugh is located in Fresno County and made up of approximately 8,000 people with 29% at or below the poverty rate level. The accessibility to community prevention programs and healthcare, when needed, is limited due to location and financial hindrances. Individuals without insurance or those underserved populations within a community likely have limited access to services and education or understanding about prevention methods. Foot health conditions are prevalent in those who do not attain proper foot cleanliness, have chronic uncontrolled health conditions like diabetes, vascular diseases, and neuropathy. Poor-fitted shoes and shoes which lack support are further contributing causes of increased risk and prevalence of foot conditions.Interdisciplinary Care Community OutreachThis community outreach project allowed opportunities for nursing and physical therapy students to provide preventative healthcare services including COVID-19 booster shots, seasonal flu shots, and health and wellness education about proper preventative foot health and wellness and the importance properly fitted shoes. Additionally, gently used shoes were available free to attendees.Fresno State Mobile Health UnitThe mobile unit provides pro-bono healthcare screening and services to Fresno County communities at no cost for underserved communities.Thank you to the project supporters:Recognition to Dr. Kathy Rindahl, DNP, NP, FNP-C, the Mobile Health Unit, and Fresno State Nursing Program for the opportunity to collaborate and serve the Firebaugh community. Recognition to Dr. Jennifer Roos, PT DPT, GCS for guiding this project for physical therapy students and Dr. Caio Sarmento, PT, PhD for taking the time to help serve in Firebaugh. Recognition and Thank You to American Sign Language interpreter Kristen Del Rosario for providing accessibility to the community and interactions.Opportunity for Health Awareness and Wellness EducationWithin the small tow’s approximately 4-mile circumference, Firebaugh does not have as much access to public transportation and because Firebaugh is a small town, often residents walk. Walking is part of their daily transportation and community involvement. Proper shoes can ensure support for residents’ feet, ensure protection from open wounds, structural deformities, and overall abilities to participate in daily activities and recreation. Many of the people who came to the table, used walking as the primary means to gain physical activity and manage mental aspects of their health. Shoes were recognized to impact their overall quality of life. For questions or additional information please contact:(catcat13@mail.fresnostate.edu)
