What is an epic
?
A long story told in the form of a poem- involves one main hero who experiences struggles and long travel
How were epics originally shared?Epics were originally shared through word of mouth and sung, before the ability to mass produced writing was an option. Why do most epics have men as the hero? This was before it was acceptable for women to do things on their own! They were expected to take care of the husband, use their time to cook, clean and raise children! Women do not have the ability to battle monsters and survive long journeys on their own.

Slide36Possible Answers
Question
Answer
Who is “that man” the narrator is talking about?
Odysseus! He is the man who led in the defeat of Troy during the Trojan War.Do the men make it home? How do you know? Which lines tell you this? The men who fought in the war eventually make it home, but it takes many years of hard work, leadership, and struggle. This is stated in the second stanza, lines 6-10, when it says “…learned the minds of many distant men…”What is the “invocation”? Book One is titled “Invocation” because it is summoning the Muse to share the story of Odysseus and his years of travel and battle. What is the speaker asking the Muse to do?The speaker is asking the Muse to share the story of Odysseus and his travels from the Trojan War and home. What can be inferred about Odysseus so far?
He is a monster! He is a strong leader and well-known; enough for people
to want to hear his story and tell it again.

Pop Quiz
At the beginning of Book 21, why is Penelope crying?
Analyze the following quote from Penelope- “My lords, hear me:/ suitors indeed, you commandeered this house/ to feast and drink in, day and night, my husband being long gone, long out of mind.” How does Penelope’s speech to the suitors portray what she has been experiencing since Odysseus has been gone?
What does Odysseus do to prove who he is?
Slide92Possible answers
At the beginning of Book 21, why is Penelope crying
?
All of the suitors are waiting for her to make a decision- they are eating her food, drinking her wine, and taking over her home. She is tired of it. By seeing her husband’s bow and using it for the ‘contest,’ it brings her to tears because she still misses him and does not want to replace him.
How does Penelope’s speech to the suitors portray what she has been experiencing since Odysseus has been gone? The term ‘commandeered’ means to take over using force; the suitors came into Penelope’s home because they expected her to remarry with Odysseus gone, and they all wanted to take his place. This sudden speech shows how exhausted Penelope is from all of the attention and pressure to remarry. By saying that Odysseus is ‘long out of mind,’ she is acknowledging that he is gone and her need to move on, but none of the suitors are going to live up to Odysseus’ ruling. What does Odysseus do to prove who he is?He shows the men a scar.

Slide127The Odyssey Paragraph Examples
Strong introductions
In
T
he Odyssey, fast paced action and heroic deeds run rampant in the story. No action ever justifies murder, an eye for an eye will always leave the world blind. Vengeance is unbecoming of any man, especially an alleged “man of honor” like Odysseus.Counter ArgumentOne could say that persistence isn’t a very important heroic quality but without it, no hero would get work done. Without the hero’s persistence cities will be destructed, people dead, and hope gone. Persistence keeps the story together. Though, many may argue that Odysseus is a strong and wise leader, as he was determined and willing to do anything within his power to return home. On the flip side Odysseus returns home successfully, though he does so alone with no word of his crew mentioned.ConclusionOdysseus stays on the path to success and on this path he has obtained the experience of barriers like time, mourning, and the fight for determination. Through ambition creates a hero named Odysseus: Ruler of Ithaca.

Slide171Example review
Greek gods, drama, suspense, and heartbreak just scrapes the surface on describing the Odyssey. If you love those things then I would definitely recommend this epic.
One the other hand, one
thing I didn't enjoy about the Odyssey was that it was a really hard read, there were many times when I had to reread the story. On Odysseus way home he runs into many obstacles, while I found some awesome I felt that others were long, boring, and made the epic drag on forever. I think there are some great things to learn from the epic such as loyalty and trust. One part of the epic that I really liked was being on the edge of my seat not knowing if he was going to live or die. Before reading this epic I would recommend having a good background knowledge on Greek gods and mythology otherwise it can be
little confusing.

This year, the
Superbowl
will be on February 5, 2017 and it will be
Superbowl 51. It is the Falcons vs. the Patriots, and it will be held in Houston, Texas. Lady Gaga is performing, hopefully without a malfunction. But when Janet Jackson performed in 2004, her shirt fell down. The most popular food consumed on Superbowl Sunday is popcorn, hamburgers, and chips. The Steelers have the most wins in the Superbowl, but the Detroit Lions have never been to the Superbowl and neither have the Jacksonville Jaguars. Like the previous teams, the Houston Texans and Chlevland Browns have never been to the Superbowl. However, the Broncos won the Superbowl last year.

Superbowl
51, so I am very excited. The Houston Texans have never been to the
Superbowl, nor have the Cleveland Browns. I was forlorn that it will be in Houston Texas and that it is on February 5, 2017 because I live in Ohio, plus my dad’s birthday is that day. The Steelers have the most wins in the Superbowl but The Broncos won last year. The Detroit Lions have never been to the Superbowl or the Jacksonville Jaguars. When Janet Jackson performed, she slipped so her shirt fell down. Because that happened, she isn’t performing. Instead, Lady Gaga is performing. Additionally, the most popular food consumed on Superbowl Sunday is popcorn. Similarly, the second most popular food consumed is hamburgers and chips.
