The Rhetoric of DisagreementsSlide2
When disagreeing with someone, be sure to criticize THE IDEA and not THE PERSON.
Bad example
: Julie has a bad idea.
Good example:
I believe that Julie’s idea could be improved. Slide3
Also, be TACTFUL and POLITE when criticizing their idea. You should give a reason WHY you disagree with their idea.
Julie’s idea is dumb and doesn’t make sense.
Julie’s idea doesn’t make sense to me because it will only her and not anyone else. Slide4
Criticizing without POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES is just complaining and accomplishes little. Be sure to end your criticism with a POSITIVE suggestion.
Julie’s idea doesn’t make sense because it will only benefit her and not anyone else. We believe that uniforms should be worn in as many schools as possible so we can all benefit. Slide5
Your TONE OF VOICE is also very important.
There is no such thing as a WRONG opinion, just different ones. We must remember to always be RESPECTFUL of each other’s different points of view. Slide6
