“HIS story - our story” “Abraham & Isaac” part 5Gen 22-25 & Selected
Pastor Dave Martin, Cross Creek Community Church, Sept 21, 2014
Slide2Hebrews 11:17-19
17
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.
He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only
son
....
18
even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
19
Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead
, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.
Slide4Slide5God’s Test of Obedient Faith…
Slide61. Obedience is required for Salvation
Genesis 22:1
Some time later
God tested Abraham
. He said to him, "Abraham!" "
Here I am
," he replied. (Romans 10:9-10)
Slide72. Obedience Demonstrates Love
Genesis 22:2
Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac,
whom you love
, and go to the region of Moriah.
Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering
on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
(John 14:15)
Slide83. Obedience is shown with Decisive Action
Genesis 22:3
Early the next morning
Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering,
he set out for the place God had told him about
. (James 1:22)
Slide94. Obedience Instills Confidence
Genesis 22:4-5
4
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
5
He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there.
We will worship and then we will come back to you
." (Romans 4:20-21)
Slide105. Obedience Stretches Real Faith
Genesis 22:6-8
6
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,
7
Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
8
Abraham answered, "
God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering
, my son." And the two of them went on together. (Hebrews
11:8, Jn 1:29, 1Co 5:7)
Slide116. Obedience even when we don’t understand
Genesis 22:9-10
9
When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.
He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10
Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son
. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Slide127. Obedience leads us toward Full Surrender
Genesis 22:11-12
But the
angel of the Lord called out to him
from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
12
"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him.
Now I know that you fear God
, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." (Phil 2:12-13)
Slide138. Obedience prompts the Lord’s providing
Genesis 22:13-14
13
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14
So
Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide
. And to this day it is said, "
On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided
." (Phil 4:19)
Slide149. Obedience always brings Blessings
Genesis 22:15-18
15
The
angel of the Lord called to Abraham
from heaven a second time
16
and said, "I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
Slide159. Obedience always brings Blessings
17
I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
18
and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
because you have obeyed me
."
(Luke 11:28, John 13:17)
Slide16Can you name some similarities between Isaac & Jesus?

Both a blessing to all nations
Both carried
wood
on their backs
Both were bound and placed on wood
Both occurred in God’s appointed time
Both were the result of
miraculous
births

willing to sacrifice
their sons
Both rode donkeys to the place of sacrifice
Slide18Both fathers believed their sons would be
raise up again
Both sons obediently submitted perfectly to their fathers will
Both involved
thorns
, Ram caught in and the crown Jesus wore
Both represent
substitutionary
atonement, innocent dying for guilty
Both happened on the mountains of Moriah - Temple Mt in Jerusalem
Both demonstrated a
fathers love
for their only son…
Slide19The Principle of “First Mention”- LOVE
“When an important word or concept occurs for the first time in the Bible (usually in Genesis), the context in which it occurs sets the pattern for its primary usage and development all through the rest of scripture” ~ Dr. Henry Morris
Slide20First Mention of “LOVE” in the Bible is of a father’s love for his son
Genesis 22:2
Then God said, "
Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love
, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
Slide21First Mention of “LOVE” in the New Testament, Gospels…
Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, "
This is my Son, whom I love
; with him I am well pleased."
Mark 1:11
And a voice came from heaven: "
You are my Son, whom I love
; with you I am well pleased."
Luke 3:22
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "
You are my Son, whom I love
; with you I am well pleased.“
Slide22John 3:16
"
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son
, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Slide23Nothing can separate us from God’s LOVE!
