Basic Info•5The Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) is a computer-based assessment based on the Essential Elements (EEs ). The WV state page is located at http://dynamiclearningmaps.org/westvirginia Gr a de specifi c test blueprints are available for Englishlanguage arts (ELA), math and science.WV uses the Year End (YE) DLM model for spring assessment.Students in grades 3 -11 participate in ELA & Math. Students in grades 5, 8 and 10 participate in science. Test a dminist ration occurs between April 3 to June 9, 2017DTC must provide the Policy 2340 training.

DLM-Computer Based Testing•6The assessment is a computer adaptive assessment . T h e p r oc ess is:A small set of items, called a testlet, then the system takes into account the level of difficulty of the test items and the students performance (correct or incorrect answers).Based on the student’s perform ance another testlet is selec t ed, which contain items that are around the same level, some wha t e a sie r , o r som e wha t h a r der t han the last te stlet (sam e , l o w e r , o r higher l e v el skil l s a r e selec t ed). Teacher Administered Tests•7Some students will be assessed outside the DLM system via Teacher A d ministe r ed tes t s. When this occurs a teacher will be asked to gather objects to use during the test. A st u dent may sometimes have a teacher admin is t e r ed test l et, and other times no t , based on t h e ad a p t i v e natu r e of t h e test and the l e v el of test l et a s signed to t h e st u den t . Accessibility Supports•55•You must review the 2016 - 2017 Accessibility Manual for important in f o r mat i o n r egarding completing the AP survey and administering the DLM. The manual includes Six Steps to Customize DLM Accessibility Supports for Students:•Step 1: Includ e Eligible Stud ents i n the DLM Alternative Assessment•Step 2: Learn About the Acc es s ibi l it y Suppo r ts • Step 3: D is c uss and S ele c t a pp r opriate Supports: Considerations for IEP Teams•Step 4: Selecting and v iewin g supports in the KITE System•Step 5: Prepare for the Assessment: Using the Chosen Ac cessibility Supports•Step 6: Evaluate the Accessibility Supports Used After the Assessment

DLM Practice TestletsMaking sure students can access the test

Practice Activities & Released Testlets •57Practice testlets are availabl e on the DLM KI T E sy stem and should be administered to the students prior to testing.Practice testlets include specific accessibility featur es. Select the practice testlets (“demos”) based on the A ccess P rofile f eatu r es. The p ur p ose of u sing the pr a ctice item s a r e to conf ir m that a specific accessibility featur e used in the practice testlet i s appropriate for the student. If not you may revise the Access Profile before administering the first operational (non-practice) testlet. give the student experience with the online test experience prior to answering live test questions. This allows the student and teacher to be aware of the computer features, and helps to determine whether the student or teacher would “drive” (use the computer mouse) during t e sti n g.

Practice Testlets•58Refer to the Test Administration manual along with the Guide to Practice Activities & Released Testlets for in f or m ati o n on a ccessing practice testlets.Guide to Practice Activities & Released Testlets YE (pdf)Practice testlets login ID always start with “demo” for the login inf o.Perso nalized pra ctice testlets are not available in the DLM system. The practice te st b u tton se en on s c r een after logging in to a s tu d e n t ’ s ac c ount does not function. DO NOT use the student ’s login ID and password when looking for pra ctice tests!

Engaging the Students•59DLM engagement activities are present in themath and ELA reading testlets. The e n g a geme n t activities do not require a student response to a DLM test question. The test administrator will engage the student in the activity and may ask factual questions but not lead them to an swers. T h e activities are meant to give the student a context for t h e que s tio n s, t a ps and activ a tes prior k n o wl e dge and e x p erie n c e , and/or introduces the concep t(s) to be addressed.

Engagement in Math•60Each math testlet will have an engagementactivity prior to the first test question. The test administrator may choo s e to ask the student factual questions about the text and graphics to facilitate interaction with the material. The engagement activity does not require a DLM test question response; it is meant to give the student a context for the questions and activate prior knowledge.

Engagement in Math ScenarioThe picture above shows an example of the first page prior to the test questions that can be u t i l ized as the engagement activity in Math. A Test Administrator can only ask factual questions such as:Who is in the picture?Where does Jay work? What does Jay do? • 61

Engagement in ELA - Reading•62The first time the text is read acts as theengagement activity. This first read-through i s conside r ed a sha r ed reading activity. The test administrator may ask factual questions about the text and graphics. This is to facilitate student interaction and engagement with the information, with the hope of promoting student comprehension. For example,“what is the boy holding in the picture?” , “ h ow many turtles are on the rock?”, etc.

ELA Reading Engagement – Video of Classroom•63The web link below brings you to a video of a elementa r y school student and his teacher as she demonstrates how to correctly engage the student in an ELA text.http://hwcdn.net/n 5d3p 8v 5 / cds/assessment/ a pa /d lm/ d l m. mp4 She i s eng a ging the student i n the first r ead of the text. As you listen to the video, notice the factual questionsshe asked her student about the text and graphics.Reminder that you may not provide the same level of interaction the second time the student r eads the text. The second read is strictly for assessment purposes, and the student must read/listen to the text and answer the questions without teacher engagement.

Prompting Not Allowed•64Verbal, gestural, model, and physical p r ompting i s n ot allowed during the administration of any DLM testlet.Students may not be given a ny he l p to answer the questions . If a stude n t does not a n s w er a q u es t i o n, the te s t a d min istrato r m a y r epeat the test question a nd then pause an appr opriate amount of time for a student to process the question and select an answer. If the student still does not answer the questio nt he teacher must mark “no response” when it is listed as one of the response options; elseif “no response” is not one of the options, then do not mark any option. Continue to the next test question after leaving the prior answer blank.

Clarification Allowed If Needed•65Some test item directions ask the teacher to say “Sh o w me t h e ….”This may not be the language you typically use when asking a s tude nt a question.When n e ces s a r y , a f t e r s t ating t h e p h r a se “Sh o w me t h e … , ” you may restate t he phrase for clarific ation by saying eit her of the following:“Look at the …”“Point to the …”“Touch the …”For example, the teacher may say “Sho w me th e red marker.” Then for clarification the teacher says “Point to the red marker.”

Manuals and ResourcesTest Administrators

Required Reading•67It is imperative that all DLM manuals and documents be reviewed as they provide the m ost detailed in f or m ation related to preparation and test administration.Specialized video and taped webinars on specific topics are also available.WV Alternate Summative Assessment materials are also important as they provide WV specific policy and information as well as highlight DLM co ntent.Prior to contacting your district/school Assessment Coordinator for assistance please e n s u r e y ou h a v e r e f e r r ed to all p r o vided r esources and cite which manual was accessed for clarification.

DLM Materials for Review•68The DLM state webpage contains updated manuals and information as well as some files that a r e no t y et updated. As DLM or WVDE revises documents you will see a note to the right of the title with the date of the update. Please make sure you access only current materials, and i f need be wai t to download some documents until you see the new version indicati o n.
