“Careers
no longer follow the linear paths that they have for previous generations. The area of study you pursue in college provides you with a broad range of opportunities after graduation rather than training for one specific career path. The skills you have developed as an English major--including technical analysis and interpretation, critical and creative writing, and historical synthesis--prepare you for a range of possible careers

“What an English major brings to career possibilities is the ability to think critically, speak articulately,
write
lucidly and precisely, and to read powerfully, deftly, and with understanding of subtleties

language works and have the written and oral skills to communicate effectively.”--Daniel Schwarz, “What to Do With a B.A. in English?” from The Huffington PostSlide5

My whole life I dreamed of being a politician. In fact, I was a junior delegate at the 1992 Democratic
National Convention. Then, I realized that in order to persuade you had to understand rhetoric, and you had to excel at writing and oration…that’s when I found English and was smitten.

Writing (and reading) is more than just words on on page, it is also the ability to convince and to persuade.
Aristotle defines the rhetorician as someone who is always able to see what is persuasive (Topics VI.12, 149b25).
Similar to
that of the physician:
“the latter has a complete grasp of his art only if he neglects nothing that might heal his patient, though he is not able to heal every patient. Accordingly, the rhetorician has a complete grasp of his method, if he discovers the available means of persuasion, though he is not able to convince everybody.”

Many scenes and actions within the Shakespeare’s plays present similar challenges to those faced by leaders in the business world:
Leadership builds on consultation rather than command and control. Collaboration is crucial with today’s business world becoming increasingly more dependent on technology, innovation and talent. Good leaders recognize the value of understanding and empathy towards their followers. Emphasizing togetherness promotes solidarity and shared purpose.

The WALL: A Student Publication
The
WALL is “a community space for creative displays.
It is a fresh canvas, a blank surface begging for decoration,
a vast white page awaiting our words and images” (WALL 2013).
Each
spring semester, Saddleback students are invited to join THE WALL literary magazine to collaborate on the layout, art work, editing, publicity, and selection of poetry, fiction, and personal essays. This publication offers our students the experience of creating a consecutive award winning journal that continues to meet a higher standard each year as a result of the innovation and hard work of amazing students. The English Major
“The English major is, first of all, a reader. She's got a book pup-tented in front of her nose many hours a day; her Kindle glows softly late into the night. But there are readers and there are readers. There are people who read to anesthetize themselves—they read to induce a vivid, continuous, and risk-free daydream. They read for the same reason that people grab a glass of chardonnay—to put a light buzz on. The English major reads because, as rich as the one life he has may be, one life is not enough. He reads not to see the world through the eyes of other people but effectively to become other people. What is it like to be John Milton, Jane Austen, Chinua Achebe? What is it like to be them at their best, at the top of their games?”
