Strategies for Addressing Students' Basic Needs InsecurityBlackburn College

A little about Blackburn Blackburn College is a private liberal arts college in Carlinville, Illinois Blackburn is one of only eight federally recognized work colleges in the United States and it has the only student-managed work program. All students are required to participate in the work program if they live on campus, but the program is optional for commuters. Each student who works receives a tuition discount for the hours they work. Blackburn is a mostly Residential Campus with 350 students living on CampusEnrollment is under 1,000

Benevolent Beaver This fund was established by alumni and friends of Blackburn College who are interested in assisting students in need and helping them be successful. Students can access amounts from $50 to $1000. There may be a restriction placed on the number of times any one student can access these funds. Students interested in accessing this fund must complete an application with a typed explanation of 250 words or less.

Benevolent Beaver Student financial need will be verified through the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Director and the Assistant Dean of Students will review each request and determine the applicant's eligibility for funds. All recipients must be in good standing in all areas of the college (academic, work, and social). When an applicant is notified that they will receive funds, the amount approved will not be released until the applicant writes a thank you note to those who have provided the monies to sustain this fund and delivers the note to the Assistant Dean of Students .

Basic Bin Program The Basic Bins is a resource which provides everyday items to students who may have difficulty purchasing them. Please feel free to let us know what you need in the form below. The items will be placed in your campus mail box within 48 business hours. Basic Bins is publicized pretty openly via flyers, announcements and social media. This is an online form. I also know of at least a professor or two who put this in their syllabus: "Any student who has difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, or who lacks a safe and stable place to live, is urged to contact the Assistant Dean of Students Alondra Olvera (alondra.olvera@blackburn.edu / DCC 134) for support. Furthermore, please notify the professor if you are comfortable in doing so. This will enable her to provide any resources that she may possess. Students can also anonymously request toiletries/hygiene items and basic food (ramen, granola bars, soups, popcorn, fruit snacks) via the Basics Bins Program at Blackburn via https://blackburncollege.formstack.com/forms/basic_bins_item_request.A package will be placed in your mailbox with the requested items."
