The Power of Vulnerability

Vulnerability offers

resilience

against shame, “an intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and

belonging” (Brown, 2006).

Shame leads to feeling trapped, isolated, and powerless.

Instead, we acknowledge negative events and feelings and allow others to offer empathy. Then our feelings our normalized, and we don’t feel so alone. Slide5

Volkswagen Avoids Vulnerability

Volkswagen avoided vulnerability by:

Creating a cheating device to allow the company to pass EPA tests and to keep up with increasing competition for environmentally friendly vehicles

Covering up the deception in elaborate internal schemesSlide9

Mr. Barton:

Do you really believe, as good, as well run as Volkswagen has always been reported to be, that senior-level corporate managers/administrators had no knowledge for years and years?

Mr. Horn:

I agree it’s very hard to believe.

Mr. Barton:

Yes.

Mr. Horn:

And personally, I struggle as well, yes.

Mr. Barton:

That is an honest answer. I appreciate that.

Interview

Question…Slide19

Discuss a REAL Weakness

What is a REAL answer to the question? Be honest!

This could be something that’s also a strength.

How can you demonstrate that this is something you’re working on? Describe your self-reflection process and learning.Slide20

19

Practice the Interview

Ask

your partner:

“Please give me an example of how you have learned from

a personal

weakness.”

Give your partner feedback:

How did your partner demonstrate vulnerability?

How could your partner improve the response? Slide21

Self-Reflection Questions

Think about a time when you avoided exposure. What did you fear? What did you do to avoid the risk?

When have you experienced shame? How did it affect you, and how did you react?

Have you been vulnerable in a situation and then regretted it? Maybe you felt comfortable with someone who took advantage of your openness. How did the situation affect you?

Think about your friendships. Are you more vulnerable with some friends than with others? Are some more vulnerable with you? Which do you consider to be the most meaningful friendships?

Think

about a missed opportunity to be vulnerable. Was there a time when someone needed your help, and your bravado got in the way? What could you have done differently?

What examples can you find of people being vulnerable—or not—in entertainment (for example, movies, TV, podcasts)?Slide22
