(BOOS)-Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction First International Conference: Transcript
This volume contains the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Aective Computing and Intelligent Interaction ACII 2005 held in Beijing China on 22821124 October 2005 Traditionally the machine end of human8211machine interaction has been very passive and certainly has had no means of recognizing or expressing aective information But without the ability to process such information computers cannot be expected to communicate with humans in a natural way The ability to recognize and express aect is one of the most important features of man beings We therefore expect that computers will eventually have to have the ability to process aect and to interact with human users in ways that are similar to those in which humans interact with each other Aective computing and intelligent interaction is a key emerging technology that focuses on m iad aspects of the recognition understanding and expression of aective and emotional states by computers The topic is currently a highly active research area and is receiving increasing attention This strong interest is driven by a wide spectrum of promising applications such as virtual reality network games smart surveillance perceptual interfaces etc Aective computing and intelligent interaction is a multidisciplinary topic involving psychology cognitive science physiology and computer science ACII 2005 provided a forum for scientists and engineers to exchange their technical results and experiences in this fastmoving and exciting eld A total of 45 oral papers and 82 poster papers included in this volume were selected from 205 c tributionssubmittedbyresearchersworldwide. Some of these . slides are based on material from the ACM Computing Curricula 2005 . Science?. Do computer scientists do experiments? (hypothesis, test, evaluate). Art. ?. The advancement of information and communication technologies (ICT) has enabled broad use of ICT and facilitated the use of ICT in the private and personal domain. ICT-related industries are directing their business targets to home applications. Among these applications entertainment will differentiate ICT applications in the private and personal market from the of?ce. Comprehensive research and development on ICT - plications for entertainment will be different for the promotion of ICT use in the home and other places for leisure. So far engineering research and development on enterta- ment has never been really established in the academic communities. On the other hand entertainment-related industries such as the video and computer game industries have been growing rapidly in the last 10 years and today the entertainment computing bu- ness outperforms the turnover of the movie industry.
