Listening

The listening on the exam will be a combination of multiple choice questions and sentence answers… Here are some strategies to succeed:Read the questions BEFORE you hear the listening and try to write sentence stems. That way you know what to listen for and can focus on what you are hearing rather than how to write it.Ejemplo: ¿Quién tuvo un accidente?“_______________ tuvo un accidente”The questions usually go in order… So listen for names, places, verbs that match the questions so you can keep up as you go.You will hear the exam passage 3 times--just like today. Be prepared!

Listening

Here are the questions… Write your sentence stems BEFORE you hear the passage.¿Quién es Manuel Mendoza? ¿Cómo fue el ladrón?¿De cuál color fue la camisa del ladrón?¿A qué hora entró el ladrón al banco?¿Quién le dio (gave) el dinero al ladrón?¿Quién llamó a la policía?¿Cuál parte del cuerpo le dolió a Manuel?¿Ahora, dónde está Manuel?

Speaking

Rely on prior knowledgeSay what you know! Don’t feel the need to memorize lots of words you don’t know because there’s a good chance you’ll forget things you aren’t already familiar with. Using prior knowledge will also help with fluidity- there’s a better chance you can pronounce words you are and have been familiar with.Use the preteriteYou are going to talk about yourself or maybe you and your family, so be prepared with conjugations for yo and nosotros in the preteriteConciseAs long as you meet the time requirement, you will be all set. Shoot for 5-7 sentences in order to meet the time limit, but don’t feel the need to go overboard and memorize an insanely long paragraph.

Speaking (exemplar responses)

1) I am going to start by giving you an example of responding to a prompt about a TRIP you took. Make a t-chart and complete one side with travel vocabulary and one side with the conjugated verbs in the preterite.2) Next, you will hear an example of responding to a prompt about a robbery in the news. Try to write down the whole script. You will hear it 4 times, and will speak very slowly.Your prompts for the exam will be about something in the PRETERITE, and your topic will either be about a TRIP or a NEWS STORY.

El verano pasado, yo fui a Puerto Rico con mi familia. Nosotros fuimos por avión. En el aeropuerto, pasamos por la seguridad. Mi madre tuvo un exceso de equipaje. Yo tuve un asiento de pasillo. Nosotros dormimos en un hotel y fuimos a la playa mucho. Yo jugué con mis hermanos. En la noche, nosotros comimos en restaurantes buenos. Yo tuve unas vacaciones excelentes.

Anoche hubo un robo en Atlanta en un restaurante local. Un ladrón entró al restaurante y robó dinero y una cámara de seguridad. Las personas en el restaurante llamaron a la policía, y la policía vino pero el ladrón no estuvo. El ladrón se escapó en un carro. Fue terrible.

Hace un año, yo fui a Miami con mi amiga Katerina. Nosotras vivimos en Atlanta, y fuimos a Miami por autobús para visitar a nuestros amigos. Nuestro autobús salió de Atlanta a las ocho de la noche y llegó a las seis de la mañana el próximo día. Katerina y yo preparamos actividades para hacer en el autobús- trajimos libros, música y cuadernos para escribir notas. Antes de ir en el autobús, comimos la cena en mi casa. En la estación del autobús, ¡Katerina tuvo un exceso de equipaje! Nosotros no supimos que hubo un límite. Katerina puso dos pares (pairs) de zapatos en mi equipaje. Nosotras trajimos nuestro equipaje y lo pusimos debajo del bus. Yo le di mi boleto al agente y me senté un asiento de ventanilla porque Katerina prefiere asientos de pasillo. Nosotras empezamos a escuchar música y leer, pero nos dormimos. Cuando llegamos a Miami, nuestros amigos estuvieron esperando en la estación del autobús local. Writing

Using the preterite tense, write about a cartoon character’s morning routine. It can be fictitious, but you must include the following:at least five reflexive verbs correctly in the preterite (circled)to wake up, to go to sleep, to brush one’s hair, etc.at least three non-reflexive verbs in the preterite (underlined)to eat, to go to school, etc.Remember… not every action is reflexive! Ex. “I walked to school”--- Yo caminé a la escuela.at least ten sentences totalThis is worth 30 points on the final, and I will be giving you feedback… so take this seriously and ask questions as you have them. You have 20 mins, then we will exchange for a peer edit and questions. Try not to rely on your notes--you won’t have them on the final!

Reading

For the reading section:Be sure to CHANGE YOUR VERBS to the correct subject. If my name is Angelica and I am writing the passage from my perspective, DO NOT answer in the Yo form in your questions… you are not Angelica! Ejemplo: Yo fui a México por 2 semanas.¿Dónde fue Angelica? Angelica fue a Mexico. ( ← Notice that the verb changed!)The questions normally go in ORDER in the passage… use keywords to determine what the question is asking and look for it in the passage! Usually all you have to do is change your verbs in your answer.Answer in complete sentences. This is an unnecessary way to lose points!Ejemplo: ¿Dónde fue Angelica? Angelica fue a Mexico INSTEAD OF México.
