4. Across the UK, 87,000 Deaf people use sign language and 4,500 Deaf people use sign language in Northern Ireland. Did you know? There are two sign languages used in Northern Ireland – British and Irish Sign languages Facts and figures4

5. Deaf people, those with hearing loss or tinnitus often feel lonely or isolated Older Deaf people in care homes are particularly at risk of isolation and loneliness, and losing their sense of cultural identity. Often they are the only sign language user in the care home and unable to communicate fully with staff and residents in their own language

6. The need We realised that staff were not provided essential training to equip them to fully support residents who are Deaf and use sign language. Staff lacked the confidence to adapt their skills and deserved more support.6

7. 7Our responseIn partnership with the Department for Communities and Queen’s University, we developed a digital ‘kitbag’ of communication resources for anyone who supports a Deaf person living in residential care.We also delivered training sessions to staff to support them to be confident when working with a Deaf resident. The training sessions have now ended but the digital toolkit is still freely available on the NISCC Learning Zone. Search for ‘deaf’ and look for the RNID logo!
