Ever heard pigeons described as being ‘rats with wings’? Often found close to busy city centers searching for food, pigeons tend to congregate in large numbers close to food sources such as garbage bins, and as a result, are frequently likened to rats and other rodents that most city dwellers consider as pests. However, whether you think pigeons are akin to rats, or not, there’s plenty of evidence showing that having them close to your home, can cause a whole host of problems. Pigeons can be a real nuisance, especially when they take a liking to your home or office building, and start making regular visits. Sometimes, those visits turn into overnighters, and before you know it, you’ve got a whole flock of pigeons cooing, performing mating rituals and making nests on your balcony or window ledge! You’ve bought a beautiful new apartment and are all set to move in. But wait, have you thought about how to make the balcony bird-proof and safe for your kids? Balconies can make wonderful spaces for pets to enjoy who have to be left at home alone for any period of time, but it’s imperative that the entire space be made ultra-safe. Pets don’t always share the same sense of danger as we do, and many of them possess a curious streak that can get them into all sorts of trouble! For anyone living in an apartment, particularly those in urban areas, the balcony may well be the only open and private area in which to enjoy being outside. Fortunately, when designed, decorated and adorned thoughtfully, balconies can become a wonderful space to relax and unwind in. Failing to properly secure your balcony – even if it’s only a lower level balcony without a significant drop the other side – can pose a serious threat to small children, and even small animals.
