BLIP Irradiation Update

Run 1 of

RaDIATE irradiation completeMany thanks to our BNL colleagues!!Total POT: 1.76e21 protons (~22 days at 146 µA

avg

)

Accumulated peak DPA – Run 1

Irradiation complete

Irradiation to be completed during next runSlide4

BLIP Irradiation Update

K. Ammigan – Aug 09, 2017

4

Raster beam profile

Inner sweep radius (0.55 cm) and beam sigma (0.51 cm) unchanged

Outer sweep radius changed from 1.5 cm to 1.2 cm

Higher peak fluence, but reduced flat profile area

DPA calculations need to be updated

Inner sweep: 0.55 cm, outer sweep: 1.5 cm

Inner sweep: 0.55 cm,

outer sweep: 1.2 cmSlide5

BLIP Irradiation Update

Target box is currently cooling down in the BLIP hot cell

Measured dose rate was much lower than calculationsSi, High-Z and DS Ti

capsules will be shipped to PNNL for PIE work

RaDIATE

BLIP run is expected to resume early next year

BLIP operation scheduled to start first week of January 2018Expect higher irradiation cost because of no cost-sharing with RHIC operationRHIC not scheduled to run with protons until March 2018

Next Steps

5 more weeks of irradiation in 2018 (total of 8 weeks)

BLIP to restart the first week of 2018Schedule RaDIATE

irradiation as early as possible in order for specimens to be available for

HiRadMat

experiment later in 2018

Need to decide on new materials/capsules very soon!! To replace either/both Silicon (5.6 mm) or/and DS-Ti/High-Z (2.2 mm) capsule slots (about up to 14 MeV available)

FLUKA analysis and safety document need to be updatedPotentially high dose rates at end of irradiation if higher Z materials are addedReview by BNL BLIP safety committeeDesign and fabrication of specimens, new capsules, capsule holders and vacuum degraders will take time!

Next Steps

Shipment and PIE of Si, DS

Ti

& High-Z capsules

Currently planning to split shipments to meet Type A shipment requirements

Si & DS

Ti

capsules in first shipmentHigh-Z capsule in second shipment, after longer cool-downNeed to start arrangement for shipmentCapsule loading, packaging, paperwork, etc.Mike Clancy the contact person at BNL?

PIE work arrangements between institutions and PNNL

Set up contract with PNNL for PIE work
