Scripture summary

Jesus’ half-brother James wrote this letter to tell Christians that true faith is shown when we go through hard times. Instead of praying for God to remove the difficult situation, we should pray for wisdom on how to respond to the situation. Godly wisdom trusts that God will provide in hard times. A person with worldly wisdom doubts God and is focused on other things. Learning how to endure hard times helps Christians become mature and well-developed.

VERSE TO REMEMBER

“If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly.” (James 1:5)

GOD

or

OUR PASTOR

Based on what you learned in the verse to remember, whom should we ask for wisdom?

Zion &

zaya talk about patience and discipline

Zaya – During this month, our lessons come from the book of James. James was a follower of Jesus. He called himself a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. He wrote a letter to Christians all over the world. In the letter, James talked about godly wisdom.

Zion – Yes, James wanted us to know that godly wisdom is different from street smarts. Street smarts teach you how to get over on people and beat them at the game, but godly wisdom teaches you how to learn the lessons that God wants you to know.

Zaya – We will study two characteristics of people who have wisdom each week. In all we will study ten characteristics: patience, discipline, listening and hearing, faith and action or what the Bible calls works, speaking right, self-control, and humility, and perseverance. Sometimes these are called virtues. We will study two virtues each week. Sometimes James will talk about more than one of these virtues that people of wisdom have in the same section of his writing. However, we will focus on one at a time.

Zion – The first virtue we want to focus on is patience. Some people think that we should not have any trouble. But having trouble has some benefits, not the kind of trouble we have because we have done something we shouldn’t, but the type of trouble we have because the way life is. For example, if you are having trouble with a subject in school even though you have studied, that is trouble.

The wind blows the waves up and down. A person who is like a wave cannot decide anything. That person goes back and forth.

Zaya – For example, a person who is kind to others one day and acts really mean the next day is like a wave going up and down. Another example is a person who does not study and then cheats on the test one day. The next day the person decides to be honest and studies but does not do it every day. They forget and play from the time they get home from school until the next day. This person should not expect to receive God’s wisdom.

Zion – I think James was talking about two very important virtues of wisdom for children: patience and discipline. We have to learn to be patient, and we have to learn to be disciplined. If we live our lives in these virtues, God will give us more wisdom.

Zaya – Another example is if we get sick. We don’t want to be sick and we have not done anything to get sick but sometimes people do get sick. God wants us to know that He knows we do not like trouble, but God also wants us to know that trouble teaches us how to be patient. God wants us to have faith.

Zion – When we have faith, we know that we will everything we need. If we have faith, we realize that God will give us the wisdom we need. If we ask God, God will help us make the right decisions. We should not doubt God. James said that person who doubts God is like a wave on the ocean.
