Getting Started Self guided tour Archaeology Library

Used in conjunction with Archaeology Library Floor Plan in the Archaeology Library Guide, this self-guided tour will:introduce you to key locations and facilities in the Archaeology Library;help you find subject collections relevant to you;help you find details of your Subject Liaison Librarian.Please note, most areas in the Archaeology Library are quiet study spaces. Please respect other library users as you complete your tour.

Walk in to the Institute of Archaeology building and take the stairs on the left hand side or lift and go to the 5th floor. There is mens toilet and water fountain on the right and the Library main entrance to your left.

Facing the entrance gate on your left you will find the self-service locker for borrowing a laptop and on your right you find the Membership desk. Walk through the turnstile, on your left, you find the Archaeology Quartos collection and on the right, the Issue Desk (help point) with lots of friendly staff to assist you with IT queries and book borrowing, as well as subject librarian and service manager who can help you with your study and research queries, borrowing books Short loan collection, as well as returning books. Adjacent to the Issue desk is the Self Service Machine.

Walk past the help point and go through the glass door. Immediately to your right you will find the Explore PC with catalogue access. Go straight on and to your right is the Library main reading room and to your left you find the Egyptology Quartos, Yates Quartos and the start of the Archaeology collection.

Carry on walking ahead and on your left you will find the print room, with multi functional machines and the Kenyon Study room, which is bookable online.

Go back to the main reading room, turn left and go straight along the corridor towards the Stacks area. On the right you will pass two reading rooms with PC and Explore access.

Walk through the door in the middle to find the Stacks area where we hold the rest of the Archaeology collection on the left, the continuation of the Yates collection (marked as blue section of the Library) and the Egyptology collection

(marked as red section in the Library) are located at the end of the Library. On the right is the Library Periodical/journal collection (marked as yellow in the Library). The loan status of Periodical section is reference and cannot be borrowed. Please ask for assistance at the Issue Desk/Help point to find out more information about how to use this collection. Where are the books that I want to read? And who is my Subject Liaison Librarian?

When you search Explore to locate an item on our shelves you will find a location similar to the following:

The catalogue entry tells you the library in which the book is

located, (in this example, Archaeology), the

collection, (in this example, Archaeology), the shelfmark, (in this example, AJ 10 AIT) and the loan period (in this example, 8 Week Loan and short loan). Where multiple copies are available, sign in to see the loan periods. If the book is currently on loan, you will be able to place a hold request on the book.Make sure you understand how to find an item in the library. Use the

Archaeology Library Floor Plan to find the collection most relevant to you from the following:

ArchaeologyYates

Egyptology

Take a look at the labels on the spines of the books to understand how the books are ordered by shelf mark (location). any time. If you are unsure which collection(s) is most relevant to you, search Explore www.ucl.ac.uk/library/explore for a topic of your choice and see which collection includes that item.
