CULTURE (N): The beliefs, customs, arts, etc. of a particular society, group, place or time A particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc.

EQ: What is culture, and how does it shape our identities and perception of the world? Quick write (use the back of your “Culture” definition handout): What does “culture” mean to you? What culture(s) do you consider yourself to be a part of? If you could explain one important thing about your culture, what would it be and why?

“Body Ritual Among the Nacirema ” As we read, underline anything that tells you about the Nacirema culture. Anthropology: The study of humankind; the study of human societies and cultures Who are the Nacirema ? (We can stop reading when someone figures it out!)

Your Turn With a partner, think of your own “ritual” that might seem strange to an outside observer. Work together to create a description of the cultural practice from the point of view of someone from another planet. Examples: A soccer game, Thanksgiving dinner, playing video games, anything cell phone related, a quinceñera , wedding , funeral, etc.
