DEUTERONOMY 6 PASSING GODLY LEGACY GENERATIONAL BEGIN WITH HEART – LASTING CHANGE V.S EXTERNAL ALL – NEPHESH – ENTIRE PERSON - EX. Marriage Model , intentionality , relationship ,

Judges 2:7-8 7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.

Judges 2:10 … and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord , nor yet the work which He had done for Israel. 11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals, 12 and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers…and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples…

1 Samuel 1:3 … Now the sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas were priests to the LORD there.

1 Samuel 2:12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they did not know the Lord

“No success in public life can compensate for failure in the home.” - Benjamin Disraeli

These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, Deuteronomy 6:1

so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Deuteronomy 6:2

3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one . Deuteronomy 6:3-4

Deuteronomy 6:5 5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 6 And these words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart ; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Why focus on the heart? Man is more concerned about behavior . God is more concerned about the heart . Behavior is external . Heart is internal . The heart is the root ; the behavior is the fruit . Lasting change takes place in the heart.

How to influence the heart M odeling R elationship I ntentionality

Modeling Be imitators of me, just as I am of Christ 1 Cor 11:1 Therefore I exhort you, be imitators of me 1 Cor 4: 16

Modeling “What you are speak so loud that the world cannot hear what you say.”

Modeling Modeling is not about perfection but authenticity

Relationship The closer the relationship, the greater the influence.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

RULES WITHOUT RELATIONSHIP LEADS TO REJECTION

3 IMPORTANT QUESTIONS How can I improve ? How have I hurt you ? Will you forgive me ?

Intentionality One intentional act will get more done than a thousand hopes and dreams.

2 TIMOTHY 2:2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

CIRCLE OF CONTROL CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE

PSALM 78:1-3 1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. 2  I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old— 3  things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. POINT THEM TO GOD

We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD , And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. PSALM 78:4

That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born , That they may arise and tell them to their children , PSALM 78:6

That they should put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God , But keep His commandments, PSALM 78:7

INTENTIONALITY The busier you are, the more intentional you must be. Michael Hyatt Myth of no time Say “ it is not important enough “

Story of old man STORY OF OLD MAN

Story of old man You impress people from afar, but you impact people up close.

What is God’s design for the family? To pass on a godly legacy. Psalm 78: 5-7 - “ … He commanded our fathers that they should teach them to their children, that the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born , that they may arise and tell them to their children , that they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God , but keep His commandments

INTENTIONALITY Intentional living is the art of making our own choices before others’ choices make us. Richie Norton
