1) What time of year do you think these photos were taken? Is this the same for both photos? How can you tell?

I think both photos are taken in the summer. This is because both men are not wearing thick coats which I think would be needed in winter.Slide3

The main Glacier has retreated back up the valley. With this view, this looks like a large retreat as you cannot see the terminus in the 1920 photo and it is clear in 2008.

2) How

much has the Glacier reduced in size in the time between the 2 photos

3) Are there any other changes to the Glacier? The Glacier looks a lot shallower in the 2008 photo as the rock circled is a lot more exposed in 2008.

There is also a lot less snow further up the mountain such as in the crevasses beneath where the men are standing.Slide5

4) What other information would you find useful to help you fully understand these photos?

It would be useful to know which month these were taken in to ensure these were not seasonal changes.

It would be also be good to have a scale on the photo or a map image along side this to allow a measurement of retreat to be taken.Slide6
