Job Application Process Hints Carefully read the job ad and address what is specified in the ad. Proofread all of your submissions carefully. Ask a friend to proofread too. Do some research on the Department/Program and personalize your application. What is the Department/Institution/Program’s mission? Is this a new or a replacement position? Is collaborative work encouraged or discouraged? How often are new faculty expected to publish and how many grants are they expected to carry? What are the interests/fields of other faculty members in the Department/Program, and how might you enhance the program with your interests? Modesty does not belong in an application. Toot your horn … no one else will. If a face-to-face pre-interview meeting is possible (at GSA, AGU or similar meeting), do it! Wait to submit your application until after this meeting, if possible, and use the meeting to think about other things that can go into the application. Remember, enthusiasm is very important!
