Translation MemoryA translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores "segments", which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, in order to aid human

translators. The translation memory stores the source text and its corresponding translation in language pairs called “translation units”. (source: Wikipedia)

Slide9

Makes sure that translators need not translate similar or identical sentences more than once.

Each unit of text in the original and target language is stored in a database (....After it has been confirmed by the translator.)When the translator starts working on a new unit, the software automatically searches for similar units in the database and suggests hits.Similarity is computed on the basis of string comparison (surface level).Usually only hits above a certain threshold will be offered (default 70 %).

100 % = exact match99 – 70 % = fuzzy match< 70 % = no matchHow does a TM work?
