Further exploring the Origins of the Cold War

Distrust developed on both US and Soviet sides

Soviets were unclear about long term US intentions in Europe, especially given that they had showed the power of their Nuclear weaponry in Hiroshima

I n 1946 Stalin:

Declared communism and capitalism incompatible

Declared need the for Soviet Union to build military and defend itself

Was

a

ntagonised by US presence in EuropeSlide7

Further exploring the Origins of the Cold War

The Eastern European nations are clearly under the control of the Soviets

[Soviets want] fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines

Churchill is not unlike Hitler

He is lying and working towards a war against the Soviet union

It became increasingly clear the alliance was overSlide8

Further exploring the Origins of the Cold War:

The Truman Doctrine

Truman (the US president) addressed US congress March 12 1947

Committed the United States to supporting anti-communists in Greece and Turkey against the perceived threat of Communist

Went further to say US would assist other countries threatened by ‘totalitarian regimes’

He essentially outlined a policy to contain the spread of communismSlide9

Further exploring the Origins of the Cold War:

The Marshall Plan

Closely linked to Truman Doctrine

A ‘European Recovery Plan’ announced June 1947

Called for European countries to create their own for reconstruction, to be funded by the US

Soviets rejected involvement: The terms encouraged the development of an integrated European capitalist economy

Soviets blocked involvement of Eastern European countries

This further strengthened the division in Europe and made Churchill’s ‘Iron Curtain’ a realitySlide11
