How do we know what is in the Bible?

Catholics adhere to the Septuagint (Greek) translation of the OT

It was the one Jesus and the writers of the NT used

Has 46 books

Martin Luther adhered to the Jamnia (Hebrew) Canon

Has 39 books.

The rabbis at Jamnia took out Wisdom, Sirach, Judith, Baruch, Tobit, 1 and 2 Macabees and some parts of Daniel and Esther. These books refer to purgatory and praying for the dead as well as some Christological prophecies.Slide4

How do we know what is in the Bible?

Oral Tradition

Somebody, under Divine Inspiration, wrote it down

Development

of

the Canon

The books

had to

Written by an Apostle or someone connected to one

Read in the Liturgy

In accord with the teaching of the Apostles

Catholic

How do we know what is in the Bible?

Real

Gospels

vs. Apocryphal Gospels

Apocryphal Gospels

:

Stories written

based on a true Gospel

either

to deceive and spread error or to add to popular piety.

They claimed to be written by an

apostle or close disciple of Christ

.

They were written much later than M, M, L and J

Matthew, Mark

,

Luke,

and

John

were well known and read since the

beginning.Slide6

Sacred Scripture, Tradition, Magisterium

Scripture and Tradition are channels of the living Word of God

Magisterium translates this Deposit of Faith for her people.

Dei Verbum 10: All three stand together like a 3-legged stool

Sola

Scriptura/Scripture Alone

Definition

Protestants do not believe any doctrine that they don’t

clearly

find in Sacred Scripture

Therefore they reject the teaching authority of the Church and the Church’s Tradition

Why do they believe this? One reason is:

Matthew 15:3 “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?”Slide8

Sola Scriptura/Scripture Alone

Apologetical refutation

Doctrine of Sola Scriptura is not found in Scripture

2 Tim 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

Scripture does speak about Tradition and Magisterium

2 Thessalonians 2:15 “Stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.”

2 Peter 1:20 “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation”Slide9

Sola Scriptura/Scripture Alone

Not everything was written down

John 21:25 “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.”

We can’t all be interpreters. Why not?

The Bible alone does not fill all three conditions for a reliable Christian religious guide:

must be within the reach of everyone

must be clear and intelligible to all

must present all the truths of the faith. Slide10

Sola Scriptura/Scripture Alone

Sola Scriptura is not historical. The first generation of Christians only had the Church and no New Testament.

The Church (apostles) wrote NT and their successors decided on the Canon

.* (event and year?)

“We are obliged to yield many things to the papists – that they possess the Word of God which we received from them, otherwise we should have known nothing at all about it.”

Martin Luther
